Sen. Lindsay Graham and his "Gang of 10's" recent proposal for solving America's energy crisis falls woefully short of substantive reform. In what is becoming an unsettling trend from the media and the public, a free pass is being given on the hard questions that should be answered before moving ahead with a proposal of this magnitude.

These are the dog days of August when there is nothing to look forward to but September, when the mid to high 90s of today, if we are lucky, give way to the mid to high 80s of tomorrow.

Read the paper and listen to television news and you get the impression that just about every problem we have is being blamed on George Bush and the Republicans in the Congress, especially the cost of gasoline, Well, let's talk about exactly who is to blame for our energy crisis. As Ronald Reagan's former secretary of energy, I have a good perspective.

The "Great Train Debate," recently published in The Post and Courier, was just the wake-up call we need to rethink the way we have approached transportation issues in this region for the past five decades. Now, all we need is a leader.

All of us are impacted by weak-kneed regionalism in Greater Charleston, especially the absence of formal regional planning to guide the continuing growth and development of our community. The question is whether we are ready to do something about it. We now have a bell-ringing opportunity. A formal regional planning project is under way, a two-year $1.5 million exercise directed by the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments.
