Will Haynie

Will Haynie, a 1983 graduate of The Citadel, began covering sailing for The Post and Courier in 2005. He has worked as a spokesman for a North Carolina congressman and served as a director of the Lowcountry Open Land Trust and the Educational Foundation at Blue Ridge Community College in Hendersonville, N.C. He is the author of one book, and was previously a columnist for the Asheville (N.C.) Citizen-Times and the Hendersonville (N.C.) Times-News.

Loring video primer for speed in Sunfish

David Loring is competing in the U.S. Singlehanded Championships for the George O'Day Trophy at Sayville Yacht Club in Blue Point, N.Y., on Long Island's South Shore through Sunday. He is one of 23 top American single-handed sailors, including Doug Kaukeinen of Rochester, N.Y., the recent winner of the Sunfish North American Championship, Paul Foerster of Heath, Texas, an Olympic and Pan American Games medalist, and former Sunfish world champion Paul-Jon Patin of Forest Hills, N.Y. Last Wednesday ended the Charleston Ocean Racing Association's Summer Series I, which was the first six-week series of Wednesday evening races in Charleston Harbor. The biggest and fastest sail boats race against each other in A Fleet. Winning Summer Series I was the J/120 EmOcean, sailed by Bill Hanckel and his son, Will. Second was Don Terwilliger's Beneteau 47.7 Dauntless, which is rated as the fastest overall boat in CORA with a PHRF rating of 27. Read story.

Local women advance in Adams

The all-women crew of Charleston sailors Jenny Gervais, Jennifer Koenig, Sarah Schaill, and Katie Hughes finished first in last weekend's semifinals of the Adams Trophy, U.S. Sailing's nationwide competition for female-only crews. The event was sailed in the College of Charleston's J/22s, and with scores of 2-1-1-1-1 in a fleet of four boats, the team advanced to the finals in Oklahoma in September. Read story.

Women's teams gain in Adams

This past weekend, two teams of local female sailors participated in quarter finals of U.S. Sailing's Adams Trophy competition, held at the College of Charleston's Walker Sailing Center in J/22 sailboats. The Adams Trophy is an event solely for women. The locals represent Charleston Ocean Racing Association, and the participants consisted of a team comprised of Jenny Gervais, Sarah Schaill, Katie Hughes and Jessica Koenig, and another team comprised of Betsy Pilcher, Mary Palazzo, Kara McFadden and Amy Ironmonger. Artemis still leads at Big Rock

Artemis, owned by John Darby of Charleston, continues to occupy the top spot in the 50th Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in Morehead City, N.C. The 50-foot custom express boat built by Sea Island Boatworks of Charleston, caught a 640-pound blue marlin Monday that is the heaviest of six fish that have been boated during the tournament. With 136 of the 176 entries fishing Thursday, 49 billfish were released including 34 blue marlin but no billfish brought to the dock. Read story.

Accidental Sailors make debut

There was a summer debut in Charleston on Wednesday night. This one was on the water. New sailboat owners Shannon Runquist, Alicia Gregory, and Kevin LaPrince, dubbed the "Accidental Sailors" in this column because of how they came into this boat owning partnership in the first place, participated in their first Wednesday night CORA race. Gulfstreamer race trickier ride this time

The biennial Gulfstreamer Race from Daytona to Charleston was held over Memorial Day weekend, starting with a fleet of 18 registered boats. Usually, the prevailing winds this time of year are from the south and light, making this a nice offshore "sleigh ride" for most of its 230-mile distance. Read story.

There are hundreds of high school sailing teams across America, and the 19th-ranked sailing team is the James Island Charter High School Trojans. The senior-laden team was one of 20 from across the nation that competed last weekend in the national championships at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Read story.
