The Palmetto State's effort in the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst (N.C.) Country Club could best be described as a lipout. Eleven South Carolina golfers were among the 312 who began qualifying last Monday, and Wesley Bryan of Chapin was the No. 2 qualifier heading into match play. Read story.

The First Tee of Greater Charleston will open registration Monday for its inaugural fall program at Patriots Point Golf Links. "It's for anybody ages 8 to 18. We will have three classes, all from 4:30-6 p.m., on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and it's an eight-week program," said Ben Grandy, program director for the First Tee of Greater Charleston. Charleston native and Golf Hall of Fame member Beth Daniel threw out the first pitch Wednesday at Fenway Park prior to the Boston Red Sox-Los Angeles Angels game. This was the second time this month Daniel has been so honored. On July 13, Daniel threw out the first pitch at Wrigley Field for the Chicago Cubs-San Francisco Giants game. Read story.

Architect Tom Fazio recently visited Wild Dunes to help the resort formulate plans for restoring the Links Course's famous par-5 18th hole, much of which was washed away because of heavy erosion. A renourishment project to help stabilize the beach on the northern tip of the resort will allow the hole to be rebuilt. Read story.

A Charleston angler has put himself in some legendary company in the world of fly-fishing for tarpon. There are three major fly-fish tournaments in the Florida Keys for tarpon, and David Dalu, an emergency room physician, became just the fourth angler to win all three of the titles and the first fisherman to win all of them in a single year. It was a new one to everyone who heard the story at Snee Farm Country Club earlier this week in the Rice Planters Amateur. Michael Foster, the 2007 winner, was asked about his opening round (a 77). "I had a moose," Foster said. Then by way of explanation, he lifted both hands and touched them to his forehead. The 10 outstretched fingers signified the number of strokes he had made on the par-5 sixth hole. Read story.

The Rice Planters gets under way Tuesday at Snee Farm with the Snee Am Sponsor Tournament. The actual competition will be Wednesday through Saturday. I know there's not a lot we can do about the rising cost of fuel and how it affects our fishing, but it's certainly been a hot topic, no matter the size boat you own. My boat is a fiberglass john boat with a 25-horsepower outboard. A 6-gallon tank should be good for all day. But factor in oil and some ice for the cooler and a recent late afternoon cruise consumed at least $20. Read story.

Elizabeth Thompson, a freshman at Porter-Gaud, finished third overall in the Women's South Carolina Golf Association Junior Championship on Thursday at Oldfield Golf Club in Okatie and earned a spot on the South Carolina team that will face a team of Georgia juniors next month. Read story.
