Philip Bowman
Philip Bowman, a Charleston resident and graduate of Ohio State University, joined The Post and Courier as a news copy editor in 1996 and became the paper's high school sports beat writer in 1999. He has more than 20 years experience as a journalist and first came to South Carolina as the editor of the Diocese of Charleston's newspaper in 1991.

The Burke boys basketball team begins the 2008-09 season the same way it ended last season. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 2 in the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association preseason poll after finishing as state runners-up last winter with a 25-2 record. Southside, which beat the Bulldogs in the title game, heads up the Class AA poll. Read story.

Wando's Christina Glover has been named the Class AAAA volleyball player of the year by the Coaches Association of Women's Sports (CAWS) and is one of five local players named to the organization's Class AAAA all-state team.
The other local players to be named all-state in Class AAAA are Meredith Mutispaugh and Elizabeth Miler, Summerville; Larz Chabra, Wando, and Tory Shepherd, Berkeley. Read story.

A challenging non-conference to begin the season could lead to a region championship for the St. John's Islanders football team.
Coach Larry Sechrist's squad dropped its first three games of the season to Class AA foes Burke, Bishop England and Hanahan. But the Islanders rallied to win four Region 6-A games and sit on top of the standings after a non-conference game against Bethune-Bowman on Friday. Read story.

Khris Middleton's immense basketball talent hasn't gone unnoticed.
ESPN released its superlatives for the Class of 2009, and Middleton, the Porter-Gaud standout who is headed to Texas A&M on a scholarship, was picked as the top shooting small forward in the country. Read story.

Beaufort defensive end Duane Chisolm, one of the best football players in the state, will have an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of a knee injury he suffered in Friday night's 41-0 victory over James Island. Chisolm was injured in the second quarter. Read story.

The Northwood Academy football team rebounded from a loss to Porter-Gaud in Week 3 to pick up victories over First Baptist and Thomas Sumter to push its record to 4-1.

Berkeley's Bruce Ellington had one of the most memorable performances in Friday night's 51-14 Region 7-AAAA football victory over the James Island Trojans.
Ellington caught six passes for 153 yards and a touchdown, but what gets your attention was his special team's play. He returned one kickoff for 85 yards and a touchdown and another kickoff 86 yards for a score. Ellington finished with 332 all-purpose yards. Read story.

The Timberland football team has been the most dominating squad in the state this season, thanks to a wealth of talent on both sides of the ball.
The Wolves have scored 247 points en route to a 5-0 start. Their 49.4 scoring average puts them second in the state behind South Pointe. South Pointe has scored 210 points in four games for 52.5 points per game. Read story.
