Philip Bowman

Philip Bowman, a Charleston resident and graduate of Ohio State University, joined The Post and Courier as a news copy editor in 1996 and became the paper's high school sports beat writer in 1999. He has more than 20 years experience as a journalist and first came to South Carolina as the editor of the Diocese of Charleston's newspaper in 1991.

Beaufort star Chisolm to miss action with knee injury

Beaufort defensive end Duane Chisolm, one of the best football players in the state, will have an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of a knee injury he suffered in Friday night's 41-0 victory over James Island. Chisolm was injured in the second quarter. Read story.

Chargers face tough test in Hilton Head Prep

The Northwood Academy football team rebounded from a loss to Porter-Gaud in Week 3 to pick up victories over First Baptist and Thomas Sumter to push its record to 4-1.

"Those were good wins, but we have a huge test this week," Northwood coach Jerry Stoots said. "We'll see if we can sustain that momentum and to stay focused mentally." Read story.

Stags' Ellington turns in special effort in rout

Berkeley's Bruce Ellington had one of the most memorable performances in Friday night's 51-14 Region 7-AAAA football victory over the James Island Trojans.

Ellington caught six passes for 153 yards and a touchdown, but what gets your attention was his special team's play. He returned one kickoff for 85 yards and a touchdown and another kickoff 86 yards for a score. Ellington finished with 332 all-purpose yards. Read story.

Timberland dominating both sides of the ball

The Timberland football team has been the most dominating squad in the state this season, thanks to a wealth of talent on both sides of the ball.

The Wolves have scored 247 points en route to a 5-0 start. Their 49.4 scoring average puts them second in the state behind South Pointe. South Pointe has scored 210 points in four games for 52.5 points per game. Read story.

Woodland aims to win region title

Lowcountry's AAAA football teams lackluster so far

It's only three weeks into the season, but it appears that there are no dominant Class AAAA teams in the Lowcountry.

Teams in Region 7-AAAA are a combined 6-9 heading into Week 4, while their brethren in Region 8-AAAA are 8-7. Take away Beaufort's 3-0 start, and the conference would also be below .500. Read story.

Bolchoz to play unfamiliar role at BE: visitor

It will be part class reunion, part family reunion when Mike Bolchoz leads his Cardinal Newman football team against Bishop England on Friday night at Jack Cantey Stadium. Bolchoz is a 1983 graduate of Bishop England. He served as a Bishop England volunteer assistant coach for six years at the school, and was on the faculty for another three years when the Cardinal Newman opportunity opened up in 2006. Fort Dorchester receives good news on starting QB

The Fort Dorchester football team received some good news Tuesday afternoon when dual-threat quarterback Galen Bennett was cleared to play in this week's game at Irmo. Bennett, a three-year starter, injured his shoulder on the Patriots' third series of the game against Greenville on Saturday night, and did not return. Read story.

Stall renames football field for longtime staffer Davis

Lynda Davis showed up at Stall High School Friday night thinking she was there to flip the coin to determine which team would kick off when the Warriors battled Baptist Hill. But she was in for a surprise. The school decided to rename its football field after her as a reward for her hard work and dedication. Read story.

Beaufort: Coach Mark Clifford has 11 starters back from last year's team that reached the Division II-AAAA state championship game, including defensive end Duane Chisolm, who is often mentioned as one of the top 10 prospects in the state.
