Double-digit jobless rates weigh on Allendale

The Post and Courier

ALLENDALE — Jobs and industries are scarce in this rural county of 11,000 people, which has the highest unemployment rate in South Carolina. Roughly 17 percent of the population is out of work, and nearly 35 percent of residents live in poverty.

"There's nothing here. Everything's closed down," said Maude Fields, 55 and jobless. "I've lived here all my life. It's home. But we are all up against the wall here."

The neighboring counties of Orangeburg, Bamberg and Barnwell also posted double-digit jobless rates last month to earn spots among the top 10 unemployment areas in South Carolina.

Round after round of layoffs in recent months has only added to the scarcity of jobs in a region that has struggled with poverty and despair for decades.

Read more about how this region is coping with rampant joblessness in Sunday's Post and Courier.
