'Change is coming'

McCain touts record, scars, says he'll help bridge partisan divide for good of the nation

By Jim Tankersley and Mark Z. Barabak
Chicago Tribune
Friday, September 5, 2008

ST. PAUL, Minn. — With soft rebukes of his opponent and his own party — and harsh words for the culture of Washington — Sen. John McCain claimed the Republican presidential nomination Thursday night and promised that "change is coming" after eight years of the Bush administration.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain makes his acceptance speech Thursday at the Republican National Convention.

The address was much like the candidate: forceful and blunt-spoken, with little of Democratic rival Barack Obama's lyricism. McCain filled it with biography and calls for bipartisanship, hammering his convention theme of "country first" and jabbing Obama.

"Again and again, I've worked with members of both parties to fix problems that need to be fixed," he said. "That's how I will govern as president. I will reach out my hand to anyone to help me get this country moving again. I have that record and the scars to prove it. Senator Obama does not."

The Republican nominee spoke to a crowd of more than 20,000 in the home of hockey's Minnesota Wild, backed by a screen that changed from lime-green to blue. Organizers extended the sparse stage into the delegate seats on the convention floor, seeking to emulate the "town hall" settings that are McCain's strong suit.

McCain walked on stage isolated in a beam of light, spotlights raking the darkened convention hall. The crowd chanted, "USA! USA!" — at times to drown out protesters who shouted from the corners of the hall.

The tone and the visuals contrasted sharply with Obama's acceptance speech last week — delivered before more than 84,000 supporters under the stars at Denver's Invesco Field, flanked by Greco-Tuscan columns and topped off by fireworks. Obama's address drew 38 million television viewers, a number GOP vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin nearly matched with her first major national speech Wednesday.

The lead-in to McCain's speech lacked the electricity of the previous week in Denver or even the previous night here, when speaker after speaker mocked Obama's experience and the crowd buzzed with anticipation for Palin, the governor of Alaska.

McCain criticized Obama on taxes, energy, education and globalization. "I will keep taxes low and cut them where I can. My opponent will raise them. I will cut government spending. He will increase it," McCain said.

But he began by offering a grace note to Obama and his supporters, drawing a single shouted "boo" inside and the hall smattering of polite applause. "We'll go at it over the next two months," McCain said. 'That"s the nature of these contests, and there are big differences between us. But you have my respect and my admiration.'

Unlike McCain, who congratulated Obama in a TV ad on the night of the Invesco speech, Obama criticized his opponent on Thursday morning. Republicans at the convention, he told reporters after touring a turbine plant in York, Pa., have 'spent a lot of time talking about me, not in particularly truthful terms. But (they) haven"t spent any time talking about the problems that ordinary Americans are going through every single day.'

At 72, McCain is the oldest first-time presidential nominee in the country's history. His acceptance capped a convention on the bank of the Mississippi River that was jumbled by Hurricane Gustav's arrival on the Gulf Coast, which forced the GOP to cancel most of Monday's events here. Palin, 44, also made history Thursday when she was formally installed as the first woman on a Republican White House ticket.

The duo plans to campaign together the next few days, starting today with a town hall session in Cedarburg, Wis.

"Let me offer an advance warning to the old, big-spending, do-nothing, me-first, country-second Washington crowd," McCain said. "Change is coming."

He also offered a brief but striking critique of his own party. "We were elected to change Washington, and we let Washington change us," McCain said, as the crowd was mostly silent. "We lost the trust of the American people when some Republicans gave in to the temptations of corruption."

He ended with the familiar story recounted so many times here this week and throughout his career. A story of a mission over North Vietnam, of falling out of the sky toward a Hanoi lake, of breaking bones and refusing early release and being tortured by his captors until he broke, and how a fellow prisoner saved him, convinced him to keep fighting for his countrymen who had fought for him.

"I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else's," McCain said. "I loved it not just for the many comforts of life here. I loved it for its decency; for its faith in the wisdom, justice and goodness of its people. I loved it because it was not just a place, but an idea, a cause worth fighting for. I was never the same again. I wasn't my own man anymore. I was my country's."

He continued: "I'm not running for president because I think I'm blessed with such personal greatness that history has anointed me to save our country in its hour of need. My country saved me. My country saved me, and I cannot forget it. And I will fight for her for as long as I draw breath, so help me God."

I'd rather be a lefty than a Fascist righty.
If this ticket wins, be prepared to enter the dark ages, Savanarola Palin can have her bonfire of the vanities and we can all flounder in ignorance a la GOP :(

I am a lefty/progressive, and I'm dealing with it quite nicely, thank you.
I believe that the McCain amnesty bill for illegals was wrong (see I'm not that far left!) corporate welfare should be cut at the same rate as personal welfare has been,(how Marxist is that?) small farm subsidies should be increased and giving non-growing farms and tax shelter "farms" tax credits should be abolished.
Tax credits should be given to companies who invest in America, additional taxes for those who ship American jobs overseas,
No more, no bid military contracts and heavy penalties for war profiteers.
Our military deserves the best equipment, and the best care after they return home.
BTW McCain gets a "D" from disabled veteran groups, Obama gets an "A".
So yeah, I'm quite happy being a lefty, voting for the right ticket, for change.

ballachulish and Thewexler.....

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you:
1. Jesus Christ
2. The American G.I.

One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

John McCain will fight, even for you, to ensure your freedom. Sarah Palin is the "CHANGE" the United States of America needs.

"Mr. Obama and his cohorts will steal your soul and fill you with darkness and suffering...."

So now Obama is some sort of soul snatcher or demon. Please stop reading sci-fi novels and let's be real here. Say you disagree with his politics for actual reasons. The blatant anti-Obamism by some people on this board is ridiculous. Many of you have no real reason or basis for that dislike.

You call him a "terrorist" (yes because his middle name is Hussein), a Muslim (not sure why that is even a bad thing, but he is most certainly not and never was)"a socialist" (coming from a liberal, belive me, he's a centrist, like most Dems are, Americans have no real idea what socialism even is), a Marxist (once again, you obviously have no real concept what that is) and some have even questioned his intelligence (which is laughable, first coming from some of the people on this board and their ridiculous statements/comments and finally you can question many things about the man, but dummy he is NOT)

I swear some people on this board have no idea how to make a legitimate argument, instead they resort to propaganda and straight up slander. I can tell you case by case why I support Obama over McCain (though it will fall on deaf ears). Your support of McCain/Palin is mostly based off of your dislike of Obama, not your dislike of his actual positions or support of McCain's. Your attacks are personal, not political or policy-based. As a result the whole gang of you look more and more ridiculous by the day.

Posted by Test2007 on September 5, 2008 at 9:45 a.m. (Suggest removal)

SC, I concur. They come up with the most ridiculous arguments that have nothing to do with anything.

"Obama will steal your soul"

This is the reason SC is at the BOTTOM of the education totem pole. Comments like that only illustrate the ignorance found around here.

john_doe - Do you even have a job? You post on here from morning until night which leads me to believe that posting on here is your "job". Suggestion for you, get a job.

It amazes me when I come to the comments section on P&C and then read the comments section of real newspapers. The comments section on the real newspaper restores my sanity. No, everyone doesn't agree on those boards but the conversation is at least intelligent. You can't even have a semblance of an intelligent conversation here which doesn't say much for Charleston at all.

Last night I was waiting on McCain to say something new. Maybe something like what he was going to do for the veterans of this war that he is so proud of.

He did prises the military for the great job they have done in the war. That, I will give him, but being a veteran, I heard nothing about what he will do for the families. What benefits he is going to provide for them. How is he going to make sure that none of the military families have to turn to welfare.

Yes, RW, our military men and woman are on welfare also.

Lets talk about the drilling for oil in the Atlantic, and the Gulf. When Gustav went through the Gulf, the price of oil went up, so what would happen if we had 4 or 5 oil platform in the Atlantic right now that would have to shut down.

There are 3 storms in the Atlantic that would affect the oil rigs. Since the big oil companies would owned these oil rigs, the prices would jump up and will not come down as fast as it goes up.

So who will the people of America blame then for the oil prices. Is it the Republican, or the Democrats. Me myself, I would just sit back (if I an still around) and shake my head, because it would be the fault of both parties.

asetlove, how exactly is Obama a Liberal Socialist? Please tell me where in his plans for America, is there any form of socialism or marxism?

I watched McCain's speak last night, but had to switch to football earlier in the evening. Wow, have to say the Giants were much more exciting!

I listened to McCain talk about his service to the country; which I respect beyond measure. I heard him talk about reform, however no real route to get there.

I heard him try to address the environment and renewable energy, to the disquite of the audience.

I did not walk away with any more information or any reason to be inspired by the Republicans.

I did notice a much smaller crowd, a much older crowd, a more subdue crowd. I did not see the energy needed to "take down" the drive for change.

As I sit on the fence I still have no idea who will get my vote!

SpiderJohn, if you are undecided, my guess would be to visit both of the candidate's webpages and see what messages they are offering. Also, there are numerous nonpartisan research institutes that do thorough analyses of the candidates' tax and health care plans.

Tax Policy Center is one of them. www.taxpolicycenter.org

It's where I went when I wanted a no-BS assessment of what both these candidates meant when they talked about tax and health care reform.

In fact, with all the secrets, internal spying, rigging of elections, outing of CIA operatives, and suspending the Constitution, it seems we have a lot more in common with our former Cold War adversaries under 8 years of the GOP than ever before.

The first thing that a good Liberal Socialist will try to do is rationalize why they aren't really bad people, they are only working for the good of the people.

People are suffering, because of the evil of Capitalism. This is most always described as the ultra wealthy having everthing while the common working man suffers with very little.

Liberal Socialist solution is to steal from those who worked hard for success and give to others.

SC - I have visited both sites, and thank you for the link. I found that very helpful.

I have to say that Obama has a well thought out plan. McCain seems the same ole.

I find it odd that the Republicans yell and scream about patriotism, but do not seem to grasp that the middle class carries the weight of this country on their backs.

Now that is patriotism.

The military is majority middle class. Now that is patriotism.

The middle class are the ones who get up every day and go to work. Now that is patriotism.

When will the Republicans acknowledge all that the middle class has done for this country and stop addressing their issues to the top elite?

what experience does Obama have again? oh yea, NONE, NADA, ZILTCH, NADA... except running a PTA type organization, yeaaaa that should be enough to run the country, fix the economy and keep us all safe ... rofl

Sarah has more executive experience than all of them combined, and Mac knows what it takes to run a country and keep it safe

this election is a no brainer, I feel sorry for all the people that are wasting their hopes and votes on Obanada

they will need serious counseling, some will probably even riot and burn up their own neighborhoods like they did in LA years ago

how can you possibly be so ignorant that you are willing to allow a NOBODY with NO experience at all run this great country?? do you not understand what is at stake?? the very life and freedoms you now take for granted will vanish if that empty suit was to get elected

fortunately there are enough intelligent people in this country to stop that from happening

you guys on the left can call off your hit men now, it will only succeed in getting yourselves in serious trouble

this is election is already decided, country first

and yes Oprah is a racist and will pay for that now that the media is exposing her true self

Socialism and fascism is by definition total government. One or the other is only the flip side of the same coin. Liberalism by definition is the expanding role of government into people’s lives.

The only difference I see in these 2 parties is the different speeds they offer on this freight train to hell. I’ll vote for the republicans because it’s a slower train.

jammer, you offered nothing about a bunch of slogans, "empty suit"/"country first". Were you just at the convention in St. Paul?

Where was this experience argument when you all put George Bush in the white house? Yeah, I though so. It was ABSENT. At least Obama has proven that he has an actual plan for the economy and foreign policy more than "let me just add on to what my father started and jack people from his administration to run my presidency. Oh and another thing, he is intelligent and had a plan, a NEW plan and is refreshing.

So now Oprah is a racist now because she supports Barack Obama...your whole series of comments was ridiculous, outrageous and irrelevant. You are now also on my list of people not worth responding to until you say something legitimate and substantive.

ballachulish, it's foolish at times to even try to insert anything intelligent into the conversation.

The best most people on this board can do is insert their own quotes and articles from propaganda websites. In fact it seems, John Doe/Jane and the like are spamming us in earnest with their favorite propaganda stories of the "radical", "islamic", "terrorist", "communist" "racist" Obamas. It's fear speech at it's best. Because in absence of anything legitimate to say, try to scare people into agreeing with you. Fear has driven way too many asinine decisions in this country. Unfounded fear has driven the worst of them. The paranoid antics of these people expose them as the worst kind of sheep, the kind that never stop to actually think about what robotic slogans they are spouting each and every day.

Newt, you better believe it's real. There is some serious insanity going on here.

John Doe ,congratulations for quoting rasmussen, though I would argue, using a poll is rather useless as they have proven to be useless time and time again. As Homer Simpson said once, "Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that." In my memory you've mostly quoted the likes of Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin and Jonah Goldberg. (all Right Wing blowhards). As well as Newsbusters, AuthenticGop, Media Research Center, The American Thinker and a Fox News Blog. (ALL Far Right Wing Leaning websites). Not exactly objective sources. But I don't really expect objective sources from someone who obviously uses facts at his convenience and quotes from extremists to back up his own extreme beliefs.

Bring me some cold hard facts as to why you are supporting McCain/Palin and maybe I'll take you seriously. Otherwise I'm just going to file you under paranoid anti-Obamism.

Please get the GED, apply to community college if they'll take you, and read a book not written by a Fox news anchor, then and only then will you be able to make an argument based on facts and logic.
Ban McCain/Palin not books!

In selecting your Presidential candidate, please reflect on the dire consequences of a docile retreat before a relatively small band of Islamic extremists; and, attempt to formulate your own opinion as to the most prudent course of action in the defense of our Nation. It might assist to consider the following scenario: the infiltration of a group of terrorists similar to the Atta cabal with a quantity of weaponized anthrax procured from a rogue state; the acquisition of a single crop-duster aircraft fitted with a dry-agent disseminator; and, the dispersal of that dangerous toxin over an American population center. The loss of American life would be catastrophic. -Or-, is it preferable to pre-empt such fanatics by destroying them on their home turf, such as Afghanistan and Iraq, BEFORE they secure the capacity to threaten our homeland? The latter is in fact a key element in current American strategy. Is it advisable to support any candidate who would reverse course and sacrifice the impressive gains against Islamofacists that young Americans have shed their precious blood to achieve? The fact that we have not experienced another 9/11 is not a by-chance occurrence. Further, it's critical to appreciate the pivotal role that our own border security plays in our "war against terrorism", keeping in mind that "Amnesty" is anathema to border security. A Nation without enforceable borders will not long survive as a Nation. The policies espoused by Obama and his enemy collaborator sidekick, Kerry, would grievously damage our Nation's National Security Interests; and, intensify America's vulnerabilities to terrorist activities. As history has repeatedly taught with grim consequences, PEACE is won only THRU STRENGTH; and, NOT THRU the nebulous psychosis of HOPE. Greg Neubeck

asset-love,
Just me and Jesus on this cloud, and he turned to me and said "Forgive them, they know not what they do"
So I forgive your aggressive ignorance and will spend the rest of my day basking in the company of the cultural elite, sipping a glass of chilled Pineau de Charente, listening to Piaf, and reading a book.
Enjoy your 40, listening to Foreigner & reading My Pet Goat

Sorry Eyfigueroa,

I'll try to keep it all factual not rhetorical next time.
Nice to have a reminder...

I'm not sure we know what Obama's ideology is. His background leaves a lot of questions. One thing is for certain though. We all know where McCain is coming from. He puts his country and the American people first in the spirit of our founding fathers. He believes in Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. He will be a protector of the American way of life.
McCain knows first hand what can happen when freedom is compromised and the rule of law is in the hands of a regime that decides ones fate based on the belief that a individual is not significant for the good of the state as a whole. He believes in individual freedoms. He believes in a government whose leaders are elected by the people and for the people. McCain believes that those who work should prosper and not have to subsidize those that don't. McCain believes in the American way of life.

I agree with EY to a degree. If you'll notice the patterns of the articles and postings you will see who the troublemakers truly are and generally they are started by people with conservative views (yep, you know who they are). It is nice to be fair and balanced and not play the blame game but facts are facts. If you don't believe me go back to some of the earlier posts and you will see what I mean.

While mudslinging is from both sides, the crap usually doesn't hit the fan until someone starts saying "lefty" this or "leftist" that. That gets people with liberal views (ie me and others) started and chaos ensues If you want real discussions try looking for a real newspaper and commenting about national and international issues there. I don't care how many "normal" posters there are, certain articles on P&C will ALWAYS start an argument.

Examples Obama, Illegal Immigration, Election, ANY article mentioning race, NAACP, ACLU - Jane's favorites are the first two so usually you will hear from her on those.

I use P&C for entertainment rather then legitimate discussion. When I first started it wasn't as annoying as it has gotten but some newer users are to blame.

Test2007,
You are absolutely right, someone calls me a lefty, socialist, Marxist (this seems to be the code word du jour), and I get ticked.

Liberals pushed bills thru Congress lowering the requirements to to qualify for home loans. A lot of families got loans they couldn't afford. Massive problems for the economy soon erupted....NoBAMA-08

The Zero Hero Uhbama. Nada. Lefties are so easy to amuse. When they start taxing small businesses to bankruptcy and the jobs go oversea because well, taxes kill incentive to work and create that nanny state that the left loves so much. Still no idea how they are going to pay for it except tax the "windfalls". Who pays those windfalls? the consumers do. Those windfalls support investors of both sides but like ballachulish believes only the rich will be affected. Naivety and stupidity. Only they have the one size fits all solution to all our problems. They are tolerant as long as you agree with them. Their misogynistic side is coming out. They think a women can't do anything.

Two years and they can't do anything in congress except blame Bush. The housing crisis erupted on their watch, the current economic downturn happened on their watch, gas prices went up on their watch but some how the messiah's faithful blame it and spin it on Bush. The victim hood of the left as demonstrated by balla. It's always someone else's fault.

I am sure the Obama camp is scrambling to make ready for next week's attacks. I think it is GREAT that the RNC could squelch the hype from the DNC the week before.

No "bump" for Obama...at least not a good bump!!

McCain Palin '08

GI John and Super Woman all the way!!!

Obama's new theme song through out his the rest of his short campaign is "Damn it feels good to be a gangsta"

the famous media lie that all these lefty socialist have talked themselves into believing... "just look at the last 8 yrs"

ahemmm ok, and?? lets see...
we've won the war in Iraq
Enron and the other fradulent powers didn't bankrupt us
911 didn't repeat itself
the dow is still higher than it's ever been before the last 8 yrs
the only workers that are "hurting" are the one's that are too lazy to work most of their lives by staying with lame over paid union jobs that only require them to actually work a few hours a week... excluding breaks and fatique leave... lol
the housing crisis is only hurting people that bought things they couldn't afford
the first ever black presidential candidate has had opportunities never afford to that race before, even without having to be qualified
we're safer than we've ever been as a nation
even MORE people from around the world want to live here than ever before
Ted Kennedy will finally leave the senate
and Hillary Clinton has been formerly put in her place

what more could you ask for?? lol

I'm still trying to find something bad, can someone help me out here?? oh yea, the POTUS George Bush isn't the best speaker or the most entertaining to watch

history will praise George Bush, he's done way more things for this country than the left will ever admit... but the history books will reveal it anyway

ahhh, the deficit... who cares!! they all owe us anyway, if you balanced out what they owe us in comparison we'd still have a surplus

HeyZeus wannabe, what exactly is Obama's experience again?? Nada, None, Zilch, ElZero

Sarah Palin has a ton of experience actually running government successfully

just because you LIE and try to say she doesn't have experience doesn't mean ANYONE is going to believe you... this isn't one of those things where if you say it enough it becomes truth... lol

Obama's going to get humiliated and buried, you people should have picked an actual experience black dude if you wanted a shot at making history

this isn't K3 like you people seem to think, no one's falling for this BS

even many on the left are jumping ship because they know it's the titanic and they'll go down with it if they aren't careful

you're just being humored long enough to hang yourselves and your too ignorant to see it, this has got to be the easiest chess game ever played

Hillary is sitting back smiling, getting her name tag redesigned for the next election

Oh well, Looks like the Liberal Socialists have given up on South Carolina and..... This just in, Obamas cohorts announce a massive scale back in Georgia.

There's two states they have decided that don't matter to them.

The Liberal Socialists who have installed Obama as their candidate stand for expanding government control into every aspect of your life, cradle to grave.

The Republican party and lots of cross-over Democrats voted McCain as their candidate, using the old and antiquated method of "One man One vote. John McCain stands for going into government with a Louieville slugger and beating it into shape to serve us better....NoBAMA-08

Thousands of American flags thrown into the trash by Obamas cohorts after his convention in Denver. Now we know for sure what the Democrats think of the U.S.A.

funny how some confuse fact with attack

a fact is just that, a fact... not an attack

the fact is Obanada has no experience at all in anything other than running a PTA, Nothing, Nada, None, Zilch, Zero

just the facts people, just the facts

if you are happy with Nada, None, Zilch, a big Zero running the country then it shows just how ignorant you really are about the freedoms we have and how we attained them

Posted by jammer on September 6, 2008 at 10:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)

you just can't fix stupid... and stupid is what it would be to vote for a big Zero
