Sanford leaves convention early

The Post and Courier
Thursday, September 4, 2008

COLUMBIA — Gov. Mark Sanford left the Republican National Convention in St. Paul early Wednesday to get back to South Carolina as the state braces for the potential arrival of Tropical Storm Hanna.

"It's becoming increasingly clear that the storm in going to affect South Carolina in some way, so he thought it was important to be on the ground as those decisions were made," said Joel Sawyer, Sanford's press secretary.

Sanford was scheduled to speak at the convention today, but decided it was more important to get back to home, Sawyer said.

The speech had been rescheduled from Monday when the convention events were scaled back in anticipation of the arrival of Hurricane Gustav along the Gulf Coast.
