New North Charleston City Hall to meet needs for years to come

John Bourne left a legacy from his tenure as North Charleston mayor with the five-story City Hall on LaCross Road.

Mayor Keith Summey plans to leave behind a new City Hall as well.

"My goal is to leave the city in a position for the next 20 or 30 years so future mayors will not be caught needing so much space," North Charleston's third mayor in 36 years said Thursday as he strolled through the vast open space of each floor of the new building.

Summey outlined what departments will go where and what the city needs to do to retrofit the $37.5 million, four-story building. It plans to move in by mid-2009.
