Group attempting to get more educators to vote

The Post and Courier
Thursday, September 4, 2008

COLUMBIA — A new group is aiming to get more teachers to the polls to make sure the interests of public education supporters are heard.

RISE SC, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization established in January, will launch a 30-day drive today at the Statehouse to get educators registered by the Oct. 4 deadline for the November election.

Details of the statewide initiative will be announced at 3:30 p.m. with state Superintendent of Education Jim Rex scheduled to attend, along with representatives of teacher and administrative organizations.

"It's time to show the policy makers of South Carolina that educators count," Traci Young Cooper, a member of the RISE SC board and former State Teacher of the Year, said in a statement.

Carrie Rachel Dean, executive director of RISE SC, said the group has been working to reform and improve public education while building support for Rex's legislative agenda.

"As we move into the election season, we felt there needed to be a real focus on registering educators across South Carolina," she said.

Dean said because outside forces are trying to influence the education system, including New York real estate investor Howard Rich, it is imperative that supporters of public education have their votes counted.

Rich pledged on a July video released by South Carolinians for Responsible Government that "I am not going away, and my groups are not going away." Rich supports vouchers and tax credits for children to attend private schools and he helps fund political candidates here.

RISE SC does not endorse candidates, Dean said.

teachers in this state are piss poor about educating our children. either they all need to go back to school themselves or the state needs to hire new ones. kids do poorly because teachers dont have what it takes to inspire children to learn. i like the idea of vouchers. scares you teachers doesnt it? fact is that parents should have the right to send their kids to the best schhols with the best teachers and the state should help pay for it if it means that they have to go to private schools.

What do you expect from the aceademia? Those that can do, those that can't teach! If you can't hold a job in the private sector, teaching is for you.

I think it's funny that people always say "Our public schools are crap! Let's send all of our kids to private schools!!" I wonder if these people realize that private school teachers do not have to be certified to teach nor have to hold a degree in their content area. I know: I graduated in May with degrees in French and International Business from CofC. I was offered a job at a fancy private school downtown - with no prior education experience! Public school teachers, on the other hand, must be certified and must repeatedly show mastery of their content area and that they meet state standards. (And BTW, SC state standards are number 1 in the country for their strength and adherence to the national standards.) So don't blame this on our teachers: they work hard to get in these classrooms, know their stuff, and genuinely love teaching and want to help students - or else wouldn't be doing it for so little money!

So sherlock, as a student who is going back to school to take classes to become certified to teach - I take great offense to your comments. I used to sit around and rant about the state of our educational system, too - and then I decided to get off my lazy butt and do something about it! In a year I will be teaching French and hopefully making a positive change in the lives of my students. My high school French teacher definitely changed my life!

And perhaps we should stop placing all of the blame on our teachers. Your final product is only as good as the raw materials that come in: PARENTS need to step in and take a more proactive role in their kids' education: make them go to school, make them do their homework, make them study... that's your job as parents! Research has shown that parental involvement in a student's education is the number one indicator of student success: so parents, step up to the plate and take responsibility for your own children and stop blaming the teachers!

MADAM 16.....!!

"...and then I decided to get off my lazy butt and do something about it!.."

We here on the FRONT LINES of freedom.....appreciate your CAN DO attitude!! Bravo !!

Whether you realize it or NOT..DO you know how much of an impact you will have on the countless marriages here in the lowcountry in the FUTURE !!! A wife speaking "FRENCH" after 10 pm on ANY night is absolutely.... HOT!!!

If you would be so kind as to perk up to what is happening between different factions within OUR state to keep OUR "SLAVERY" schools in plantation mode would be most appreciative! We need to keep the pressure up on these HOOTS to weed out ALL ..LAZY Parents, teachers, School Officials and ..ABOVE... all OUR LEGISLATORS !!!

MADAM...if you turn out to be the BEST French teacher since the French and Indian WAR....YOU DESERVE to be able to be PAID LIKE IT !!! You should be able to pick and choose the students you WANT in your class !! PERIOD !!!

Who will RUN your classroom? YOU or Jim (T-REX) REX ???

I expect to see your beautiful FACE on a BILLBOARD on I-26 advertising your services !!!

FRENCH...for everyone !!!!

RW - my post wasn't in response to you, but to sherlock who did bash teachers. And yes, some public schools are cesspools... but so are some private schools. (Aiken Prep. in Aiken, SC where I went to school until 4th grade is a prime example.) And, if you can't deal with the public school craziness and can afford the sharp decrease in salary to teach at a private school - more power to you! If you are going to send your children to private school, I would research their teacher requirements. Just a word of advice.

My kids went to a private school, and not only do those teachers have masters degrees, several have doctorates. I think the teachers in our public schools do the best they can with a large number of unmotivated students who are the products of unmotivated and/or uninvolved parents. The teachers do not get the needed support from our overpaid school district administrators, who appear to believe that as long as no one gets killed in the classroom, the disruptive ones should be able to stay and interfere with the teaching process.

I would like to add, though, that I am against attempts to get anyone to vote who doesn't care enough to do it on their own, no matter who they are.
