Escaped 'Houdini' still eludes capture

Staff report
Thursday, September 4, 2008

Adam Lee Longa

Adam Lee Longa

A detainee dubbed Houdini after twice escaping in Dorchester County remained at large Wednesday.

Authorities have scoured the places where he might hide and followed leads, but they found no sign of him, said 1st Sgt. Michael Miller with the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office. "We're just waiting for someone to turn in a tip," Miller said.

Adam Lee Longa, 29, escaped early Monday morning by slipping out of his cuffs and shackles and leaping from a moving patrol car. Last fall, he escaped from the Dorchester County jail by lingering after a Bible study class and sneaking out through a space above the ceiling.

Longa was last seen wearing black-and-white striped jail garb, an orange T-shirt, gray socks and no shoes.

To provide information on his whereabouts, call the Sheriff's Office at 873-5111 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.

Earlier reports indicated that he was given stitches for a head laceration and that may have been part of his plan to be placed into a position to escape. The next time he needs stitches, give him some crazy glue and a Tylenol and put him back in his cell!

With Barney letting the POS get away so easily, I am afraid Barney and his crew would hit a kid going to school if they started shooting at Houdini. The Sheriff's office needs to fire these incompetent deputies who let a known escape risk get away and bring in professional officers.

Quite da contary CB.... True, without the "comforts" people currently have in jail, there'd prolly be less people willing to break the law. But with 8x10 cells without any free time, we'd see a lot more Houdinis! People are going to break the law regardless, and knowing that they have to spend years in 8x10 hell, they're going to go through even more drastic measures to make sure they don't get caught. If anything, I'd figure a lot MORE police deaths, car chases, shootouts, etc.

Um Coldbeer there is NO yard they go into when they are out on rec. it is a cage they are allowed to walk out into. This dude was not a trustee who IS allowed on "the yard" as you put it!!! it is against the law for 24/7 lock down unless you are in solitary for causing trouble in the unit in which you were place while in gereal population. the cells are actually not much larger than 8x10 when housing 2 inmates the larger ones are so over filled that they inmates are piled up on top of each other. as for the religious study that is up to the inmate but i assure you if the inmate was a threat they would not be allowed the priviledge of education or religion. this happened b/c the officer failed procedure while in transport of a prisoner and the guy took the chance. had the shackles and chains been put on properly they would have never been able to be removed! i am not defending this guy who escaped but the officer is also at fault for not doing his job as well. you have questions about jail ask away!!! learned it all from my husband!

Satan...The Problem is with the policy and Procedure...EVERY Transport should be with 2 Officers unless more is Needed.Supervisors are breaking policy and procedure and then blaming it on officers because of lack of manpower....Some Dc officers are not certified to do transports but are allowed to by Supervisors.....He was no Houdini. He just exploited numerous flaws in the system and Supervision. Plain and simple.

every transport should be in the dog box not in patrol cars!!! and as for jails and prisons 2 different systems totally! they are no where near the same. and while i agree with some of what you say coldbeer, being plain inhumane to anyone is plain wrong. yes each criminal should pay their debt to society even non violent offenders deserve time out of their cell. i live for each phone call when he is gone and i live for each 1 hour visit i get each week there is no reason to punish the spouses and children for the inmates screw up!!!

your husband in jail?

Posted by Satanssybil2007 on September 4, 2008 at 2:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

no he is not he just did 90 days in may june and july 2008. and when he was transported to court they transported him alone in the dog box. he was not shackled but the handcuffs were around his wrists and then also clasped to the bar in the dog box and his ankles were locked to the bottom bar with cuffs. and when the door was locked it was locked electronically!!!! the one thing the officer did allow was for me to hug him before they put him back in the dog box after court. he spent 20 hours a day in his cell and had 2 hours out in the day and 2 at night.... so why DC did not use the dog box for this transport is my main question.

Ok Coldbeer I accept your point of view and respect it and i always to remind myself when he is there that it is not my fault and i did nothing to put him there. I too was a navy wife so I know what it is like when your husband is deployed. My late husband DIED on a 6 month UNITAS cruise to the Persian Gulf. So been there done that. I have served 18.5 years for the Navy/Marines. My husband KNOWS he did it to himself and i take no blame but at the same time i also tell him he put me in jail with him b/c he is gone and phone calls letters and visits just does not work for any marriage and he tells me all the time when someone gets their Dear John ltter and how scared he is when he gets letters from me that it will be his Dear John. Each individual will have their own views and feelsings on inmates and each one should be respected as I respect your ColdBeer!!!!

Why is he in jail

Posted by drp7773 on September 4, 2008 at 7:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Again we have the bonehead dorchester cops run by the big bone head letting a prisoner escape then ask the public to do their job and help find him, isn't it time to retrain, and hire some police that actually know what they are doing.

if he escaped once already why was he still in a county jail? seems to me he should have been put in max security. my son james belli was placed in lieber for non violent burglary crime. he was placed there due in a mistake on his paperwork that showed an escape charge. (WHICH HE WAS NOT CHARGED WITH). whole system in sc is so screwed up. nothing surprises me anymore. is the officer that didn't have him cuffed properly still working and getting paid? if i didn't do my job properly....i'd be fired.
