COLUMBIA A new group that formed in January will be working in the next 30 days to help teachers become involved in the political process. Making sure teachers' voices are heard at the polls this November is imperative due to the outside forces trying to influence the state's education system, said Carrie Rachel Dean, executive director of RISE SC. Dean said the group is focused on reforming, improving and supporting public education. Details of its statewide effort to register public school educators for the November election will be announced Thursday at a news conference at the Statehouse. The deadline to register to vote in the general election is Oct. 4. "It's time to show the policy makers of South Carolina that educators count," Traci Young Cooper, former State Teacher of the Year and current member of the RISC SC board of directors, said in a statement. "Tomorrow, we will announce a new and exciting initiative aimed at ensuring that their voices are heard." Read more in tomorrow's editions of The Post and Courier.
