Republicans ready for their turn

Local delegates prepare for national convention

The Post and Courier
Monday, September 1, 2008

Lowcountry delegates and alternates in this week's Republican National Convention know that their presidential primary campaign— unlike the Democrats' — was settled a long time ago, so their convention won't feature as much drama over whether the party will unite.

But they say the convention still is crucial to get out GOP hopeful Sen. John McCain's message and to offset the momentum built up by the Democrats by the time they wrapped up their convention in Denver last week.

Mark Hartley, a former Charleston County Republican Party chairman, said he has been with McCain "since Day 1." He backed McCain in 2000 as well as this year.

While Democrats wondered whether Sen. Hillary Clinton and her supporters would join Sen. Barack Obama's campaign enthusiastically, Hartley said he has seen supporters of Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and of former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, who opposed McCain in the primary, returning to the fold.

"We want to have all those folks back, and I'm sure we will. It's going to be important," he said. "Sen. Obama is going to get a bounce this week, and we have got to neutralize that. We've got to keep our momentum moving forward, and I think this convention is going to cause that to happen."

Charm Altman, wife of former state Rep. and current Charleston County School Board candidate John Graham Altman, attended almost every Charleston visit made by Republican presidential candidates during the primary campaign and said the convention should make clear how different McCain is from President Bush, whose popularity has ebbed.

"Bush is no longer an option. He no longer has anything to do with it," she said. "McCain will lead this country. He's not another Bush, and I think the more they portray it that way, the more Republicans get their backs up."

Some have wondered what surprise the McCain campaign might have in store, such as a pledge to serve only one term. Hartley said McCain also could raise eyebrows if he switched formats during his Thursday acceptance speech.

"There's a number of folks who are pushing the senator to go back to the standard approach of the town hall meeting and really use that approach that he's been so successful at,' Hartley said. 'A lot of folks are hoping he'll do that for his acceptance. If that's true and that happens, it will be a neat thing."

Hartley predicted that "absent a very controversial (vice presidential) pick, the entire party is going to be behind whoever we choose." McCain put to rest such potential controversy Friday by choosing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential nominee, a pick applauded by the party's base.

S.C. Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston, said McCain must show how he differs from Obama, particularly his philosophies in what government should do.

"He just needs to reiterate to the American people his agenda for reforming Washington, holding taxes down and slowing the growth of government and, most of all, keeping people safe," Harrell said. "The economy and other domestic issues are very important, but when you boil the whole thing down, we need a president who will make sure our children are safe, and I think that is John McCain's strongest suit."

Charleston County GOP Chairwoman Lin Bennett will be attending the convention as an alternate, and in addition to the presidential activity, she also will be keeping an eye on whether the party passes a plan that preserves South Carolina's early primary in the 2012 presidential season.

South Carolina remains a red state and is widely expected to vote for McCain this fall. Still, state GOP Chairman Katon Dawson, said the party will work hard.

"Do I feel John McCain will win the eight electoral votes in South Carolina? Yes I do. Are we campaigning like that? Not at all," he said. "We're not going to take anything for granted."

Hartley agreed that McCain is in good shape here, as is incumbent U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, who is running in the only other statewide election this year.

The convention — and McCain's ultimate popularity this fall — likely will translate into whether incumbents such as state Rep. Wallace Scarborough and Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten will win their races.

"The more solid the state is for McCain and Lindsey, the more it helps us down the ballot," Hartley said. "All of the pundits are saying how bad the Republican year is going to be, but I would suggest to you that there will be a time when the top of the ticket in South Carolina will help with us."

The Minneapolis convention also will provide an opportunity for Dawson to schmooze with delegates from other states to help his chances of being elected the next Republican National Chairman in January.

Dawson, the fifth longest serving state chair, said he is honored to be mentioned for that post but said any politicking will remain in the back seat until the presidential race is over.

This is interesting. Just breaking in the real news about Palin.

Apparently she was/is a member of an Alaskan secessionist party that wanted to succeed from the USA and keep all the oil and gas profits for themselves.

JohnQ,, I watched it and I call B.S . Just like the naked photo B.S .. She is talking about that party and not for it. You can bearly hear what she is saying the voice over and music drowns out most of what she said... Please come with more than a made up doctored YOUTUBE video.

Congratulations on your recent sex change operation.

Did you know when you made the transition from man to woman, your foreskin was injected into your lips to give you that glamour model appearance?

So basically every time you lick your lips you're blowing yourself.

These conventions are just pep rallies for their candidates. They are boring to watch on TV since all has been decided beforehand. The Democrats tell the truth about their desires for a socialist Marxist state. The Republicans tell the lies of how they want conservatism, less spending, more freedom, and free markets. When they preach that mantra ask them why then President G.W.B. would want the No Child Left Behind Act, mortgage bailouts and foreign interventionism? We need to vote for Libertarian Party and Constitutional Party candidates.

I've seen that video before.....obvious why he doesn't want to meet McCain in that forum. For a potential leader of the free world, he sure is afraid.

jeff61,

I agree with you, we should only stick to the story and the facts. Like this fact:

“john” is another word for “bathroom”. So, speaking about someone who seems to protest too much, I ascertain johnq chose his screen name based on his infatuation with bathrooms, particularly bathroom stalls.

It appears johnq is not an active “toe-tapper” but he is obviously an active listener for tapping.

I can only surmise that johnq placed that piece of TP on the floor to attract a date.

You have been outed, bathroomstallq!

For some reason I'm thinking about what someone said after 9/11, "we have to be right 100% of the time, the liberals, oops, strike that - terrorists, only have to be right once."

Why do conservatives let liberals put them on the defensive for the things that liberals celabrate. More data that matters jd45 or they will turn the whole debate on to this.

Ok, sic em, but with data and logic. It will really PO them but more important it can positively influence reasonable onlookers. Don't let them get us off the road to victory. Palin has already proved she can deal with it so fight on!:)

Sarah is a breath of fresh air on our national political scene. Contrast this to how frequently an alarmingly narcissistic Barack Obama, with an obvious sense of entitlement, instinctively tilts his head back; and, with an angry countenance, looks down his nose at the audience! A characteristic which was front and center in Obama's comments about bitter folks in Small Town America who "Cling to their religion." Obama’s inflated sense of his own importance; and, his pretentious demeanor should be of concern to all Americans. Do you recall another infamous politician who exhibited precisely the same characteristic? If you guessed Benito Mussolini, you're right on. As Bill Clinton so aptly said of Obama: "He's simply a typical Chicago thug." America best wake up to the dangers that such a warped individual represents before we let him get anywhere near the White House. It's incredible that the Democrats have nominated Obama, the least qualified Presidential candidate in American history, for the leadership of the free world. May God protect us. Greg Neubeck

No, say it ain't so:

From Dana Bash
CNN

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) -- Bristol Palin, the 17-year-old daughter of Sarah Palin, is pregnant and will keep the baby and marry the father, a senior aide to Sen. John McCain confirmed to CNN Tuesday.

Bristol Palin, second from right, holds infant brother Trig at Friday's announcement of their mother's candidacy.

Republican presidential candidate McCain was aware of Bristol Palin's pregnancy before he chose her mother for his running mate, the aide said.

"Senator McCain knew this and felt in no way did it disqualify her from being vice president," said the aide. "Families have difficulties sometimes, and lucky for her she has a supportive family."

The 17-year-old, a senior in high school, is about five months along, in her second trimester, according to the aide.

Big Amen from this corner on that. But, handing out free condums in schools seems just as ridiculous in the opposite direction. On the one hand you are telling a teenager to just ignore the raging hormones in their body or statistically they will forever change their life to the negative. True, but not realistic. On the other you are telling a teenager, hey, it's not your fault, go for it, no problem. Something the average invincible teenager already thinks anyway with the added enforcement of what comes accross the public airwaves. Where is the middle ground? I honestly don't know.

johnq-how is a DWI "bust" from 24 yrs ago, of a VP candidate's spouse relevant to ANYTHING here?

BTW, I do not think Obama's admitted use of marijuana & cocaine in his youth are relevant either. Even if he'd been busted, unless it was a felony, it would have not relevance 2 decades later.

FAmily Values is more than telling your child not to have sex. This woman (this family) is a time bomb waiting to happen...the best thing McCAin can hope for is that she slides out this week claiming the need to be there for her family, go back to Alaska and start teaching the younger kids about safe sex. Now there are allegations that Todd has a DUI on his record-Troopergate, etc...This is not a typical Ameican family, its a typical red neck american family-and one that should not be trusted with a 72 year old cancer patient as president of the USA. McCain got lucky enough with the hurricane, he could be even more lucky if she quietly bails out!

Armed groups of police in the Twin Cities have raided more than a half-a-dozen locations since Friday night in a series of preemptive raids before the Republican convention. The coordinated searches were led by Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher but conducted in coordination with federal agencies.

Five Minnesotan activists are still detained on probable cause holds, which means they can be held for thirty-six hours without charge, excluding weekends and public holidays. According to this timeline, they won’t be released before Wednesday. The sheriff called them "criminal anarchists who are intent on committing criminal acts before and during the Republican National Convention.”

The raids and detentions have targeted activists planning to protest the Republican National Convention, as well as journalists and videographers documenting police actions at protests. Groups directly affected by the raids include Food Not Bombs, the RNC Welcoming Committee, I-Witness Video and Communities United Against Police Brutality.

Democracy Now! spoke to Michelle Gross from Communities United Against Police Brutality on Sunday. She was at the activist convergence space Friday night when it was raided.

MICHELLE GROSS: I was sitting there waiting for a meeting to happen with other legal people. We were working with a kind of a collective of legal people, and we were waiting to have a meeting. And I was literally just sitting there drinking some water and relaxing, when, you know, these Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department people came blazing in, screaming “Get on the floor! Get on the floor!” and waving guns at everybody in their faces.

And they basically—at the time, I quickly thought and opened up my video camera and hit my record button and started recording the scene. Then, because they were, you know, waving guns in my face, of course, I had to hit the floor, but I kept my camera recording the whole time.

Posted by willie08 on September 2, 2008 at 9:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It was really an effort led by the Ramsey County Sheriff to put people in preventative detention. The raids were carried out by Sheriff Bob Fletcher, who had been arguing for months that there needed to be a stronger law enforcement response, and he was being told that wasn’t necessary. And so, he sent his officers in, after doing intelligence gathering and infiltrating these groups.

And then, really what he did is he took common household items that you would find in any home in Minnesota—a hatchet, rope, glass bottles and rags—attached the label “anarchist” to the people who are living in the homes, and then raise this public fear that the anarchists were threatening violence, public disorder. But really, it’s taking a common household item, something you’d find anywhere, calling it an edged weapon and then attacking people for their political beliefs, that then is used to generate this public fear and keep activists detained, as you said, through Wednesday at noon.

"Bristol and the young man she will marry"

This is one reason the out of wedlock birthrate among whites is much lower than that of blacks. More often than not whites choose to marry the child's father (while pregnant) and black women choose not to. They go on with their pregnancy and have the baby, thereby keeping the same status they had when they got pregnant in the first place. It seems to me that they calculate and post out of wedlock "births", not out of wedlock "pregnancies". This means, they don't count the number of women that got pregnant when they were not married, they count the number that gave birth before getting married. Not starting an argument, just making an observation, as I have seen this more often than not. And feel free to correct me if I am wrong about how they come up with the OOW stats.

Let's contrast Sarah's de-facto accomplishments to the documented record of Joe Biden. In spite of the fact that Obama's 3:00am VP announcement was a direct, and not-so-subtle, slap at Hillary and her supporters for her Primary criticism of his notorious and painfully evident inexperience, the Clintons are ecstatic over Obama's pick of "Jawbone" Biden as his VP. A man who can speak eloquently ad-nauseam while saying absolutely nothing of substance. Biden, advertised as the brain-trust for the Obama ticket, is the same foreign policy "expert" who told the Israelis that they would have to passively accept a nuclear armed Iran, which of course would eventually guarantee the destruction of their Nation. The same individual who stated that the "Surge" was doomed to failure; and, who promoted the partitioning of Iraq into three separate nations, which would have precipitated a violent Iraqi civil war; and, assured the eventual incorporation of Shia Iraq into Iran. Sounds more like a single digit IQ than an expert! The McCain camp will certainly exploit Biden's former prolific praise of McCain; his multiple assertions that Obama was not sufficiently experienced to assume the Presidency; and, who correctly noted that the White House was not the proper venue for Obama's: "On-The-Job-Training". Obviously Obama was smart enough to recognize that he needed a "Handler" close-by 24/7; and, no-doubt has scheduled Biden for remedial training in diaper changing. It's a good time to invest in "Pampers". It's become apparent that Obama has some insidious need to constantly poke the Clintons in the eyes. One has to wonder if an "angry" Michelle Obama is prompting such responses! However, the Clinton's, astute in the way of politics, will simply re-enforce their base of supporters in preparation for a now certain 2012 bid. Greg Neubeck

Good point lovely. I don't believe that you HAVE to get married to someone you got pregnant for. Everyone I know that got married b/c they got pregnant is either divorced or living a long unhappy marriage. I think parents push the marriage idea to legitimize the teenage sex that was happening. The same thing with britney spears sister. Beyonce's sister actually married while she was pregnant. Of course no one realizes that they had a quickie divorce recently too. So instead of having to call him the father of her child or "her boyfriend" they can legitimize it by calling him her future husband. Umm thats not fooling anyone.

It is never a good idea to get married just b/c you are pregnant.

Umm, and it seems that literally 50% of the posts on these boards have been written by john doe. Ridiculous. Do you have a damn job??? obviously not.

It usually is for the child.

Is jd45 bugging you because he is standing his ground and replying with data and source?

More important, does anyone know when Palin will address the convention? I don't want to miss that.

Thanks, Test. I brought it up because people are always throwing the number of out of wedlock births there are among blacks and no one ever realizes that as a factor. And you are correct, I have friends that got married just because they got pregnant and were divorced by their 21st birthday or are still living in a loveless marriage. Some people don't realize that teenage flings are usually not the real thing.

And, you are so right about Solange (sp) Knowles. She recently got divorced from her child's father. A man she married just to cover up the out of wedlock pregnancy. This is part of the reason the divorce rate is so high.
