Delivery of behavioral health care to be studied

COLUMBIA A new legislative committee assigned to study what health care officials describe in South Carolina as a "crisis" regarding the treatment of residents with mental health issues is being established. Rep. Vida Miller of Pawleys Island, a Democrat who represents Charleston and Georgetown counties, will serve on the Behavioral Health Care Services Study Committee. In recent years, the number of Department of Mental Health beds has decreased by 500. The demand leaves patients in emergency rooms that aren't always equipped to treat them.
