In today's fine steel, aluminum and carbon fiber world, it's hard to fathom that many cars once were constructed of brass and sheet metal. The Hilton Head Island Concours d'Elegance, a four-day Oct. 30-Nov. 2 festival of cars, entertainment and socializing, will showcase brass cars as well as the 100th anniversary of the Great Savannah Races. The races, from 1908-11, are considered the first grand prix road races in the United States. The tribute to brass cars, meanwhile, will have at least one car, including steam-powered and electric models, every year from 1899 to 1915.
