Cannon, Wood card 68s for City Am lead

The Post and Courier
Saturday, May 17, 2008

Former College of Charleston golfer Mac Cannon and Matt Wood, who tied for third a year ago, shared the first-round lead at 4- under-par 68 in the 2008 Charleston City Amateur golf championship played at the Municipal Golf Course on Friday.

Cannon and Wood are one shot in front of College of Charleston golfer Tim Tang and Duke golfer Justin Hare.

Thomas Bullock, the defending champion, is tied for fifth place at 2-under 70 along with 2006 champion D McCollum, six-time winner Frank Ford III, Scott Larkin and John Patrick.

Eagles on both back-nine par-5s, the 10th and 15th holes, were the highlights of Cannon's round. He had birdies on 1, 9 and 14, with bogeys on 5, 11 and 16.

Wood recorded six birdies, three on each side, and two bogeys. His front-nine birdies came on 3, 4 and 8, with bogeys on 2 and 9, and he added birdies at 12, 15 and 17 to finish at 4 under.

Hare had five birdies and two bogeys, with an even-par front side and 3-under back nine. Tang, who recently tied for medalist in U.S. Open local qualifying, also had five birdies and two bogeys, shooting 34 on the front and 35 on the back nine.

The tournament was delayed briefly late in the afternoon because of a lightning warning, but all 208 players completed their rounds. Tee times today run from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., with the field flighted after today's round.
