Drinking law enforcement weighed

Folly Beach is one of a handful of beaches where it is legal to bring alcohol. It is without a doubt one of the reasons the area known as "The Edge of America" is such a weekend and summer hot spot. But some residents are concerned about underage drinkers and littering. Several residents want more done to enforce the laws. "There's plenty of ordinances on the books, so it becomes a question of enforcement," said Folly Beach Councilman Charlie McCarty. Applicable ordinances brought up at the meeting include ones prohibiting indecent exposure, unlawful assembly and glass containers on the beach. During Tuesday's Folly Islands Voters Association meeting, about 15 people tossed around ideas to cut down on infractions. A few supported the idea of organizing a citizens' patrol that would call in to the Folly Beach Public Safety Department. Councilwoman Laura Beck suggested the city set up DUI stops on weekend afternoons as people are leaving the beach. Some residents believe that ticketing is not an effective deterrent if all they receive is a minimal fine. Councilman Tim Goodwin said perhaps offenders should be required to pick up trash on the beach as part of their punishment. "Put 'em in an orange jumpsuit and make 'em pick up trash," he said. Even though attendees laughed along with him, some didn't think the idea was too far out in left field. "I think the scarlet letter treatment is a good idea," said resident Chris Snelson. "Make it a deterrent." The association's president, Toni Catoe , said she wants to communicate with people via e-mail to get a better sense of how residents feel about the issue. "We want to speak with everyone from FIVA and represent everyone's opinion," she said. If you live on Folly Beach and want to contribute ideas, call Catoe at 588-2055, or send a letter to Folly Islands Voters Association, P.O. Box 1206, Folly Beach, SC 29439 .

These people want the freedoms to do as they please because they live there but want to raise sand and punish visitors who flood that dump with money. Go somewhere else and take your adult beverage in a cup.
