Mount Pleasant wants to take over road project

MOUNT PLEASANT — Town Council is exploring whether it can take over Johnnie Dodds Boulevard widening project from Charleston County. Some Council members feel the project has languished since it was approved four years ago. Councilman Paul Gawrych said he wants a more aggressive schedule for completion of the project. The construction plan, which calls for completion in 2012, is too ambiguous, he said. The town could shave a year off the process if it took over, he said. "Let us take this on," Gawrych said. The town has $70 million for the widening of the congested boulevard from four lanes to six from the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge to the I-526. The funds are the town's share of the RoadWise half-cent sales tax that voters approved in a referendum. County Councilman Dickie Schweers of McClellanville said he is open to discussing the issue. "I certainly respect Mount Pleasant's ability to oversee road projects. But on large projects such as this it's always tougher being on the outside looking in," Schweers said. The town will contact the county to suggest a meeting of the Town Council and County Council transportation committees. Reach more in tomorrow's edition of The Post and Courier.

This is very interesting to say the least.Does Mr. Schweers think he can wrestle control of these funds from a group on County Council that would like to hammer TOMP? There are certain members of CC that think diversity is more important than taking care the urgent needs of its citizens such as infrastructure.
