The Bishop England boys soccer program doesn't rebuild — it reloads. George Khoury scored a goal midway through the second half and keeper Brandon Costa recorded the shutout as Bishop England beat Waccamaw, 1-0, Tuesday night to capture its 11th straight Class AA Lower State title before a crowd of about 500 at Bishop England High School. The Bishops will face Emerald, a 3-2 winner over Walhalla, in the Class AA state title game Saturday in Columbia. The Bishops, who are making their 11th consecutive state final appearance, will be going for their fourth straight Class AA title. There were times during the regular season when Bishop England head coach Ed Khouri wondered if the Bishops' run of state title game appearances might come to an end. "We lost so many great players from last year's team that I honestly thought we were going to have to rebuild the program this season," said Khouri, who has been the Bishops head coach since 1992. "The boys really battled and worked hard to improve all season, and I couldn't be prouder of what they've accomplished. I'm very proud of this group. "We knew this was going to be a tough game and it was. Waccamaw has done a very good job with their program over the years." The Bishops did it with defense Tuesday night, holding the Warriors to just three shots on goal for the entire match. "We kept it tight all game," said senior defender and team captain Alvin Hooper. "We tried to keep things on the ground, but there was some ping-pong moments out there for us. "We've been a good defensive team all season and we knew we had to play well tonight to get back to the state championship game. It's an amazing feeling going back to the state championship game again." After a scoreless first half, Khoury gave the Bishops a 1-0 lead with his goal in the 53rd minute. Corey Clawson slotted the ball through to Khoury, who took two dribbles and beat the Waccamaw keeper for the score. "Great pass from Corey," Khoury said. "I was a little nervous when I took the shot, but it went in and that's all the matters."
