Charmed by drugstore from past

We are back home from a recent stay in Charleston. It is such a gracious city.

The Tellis family has kept the Tellis Pharmacy on King Street open for more than 50 years.
I just wanted to let you know that we were charmed by Tellis Pharmacy at 125 King St. and the two proprietors. This experience was a step back in time. Visiting parents should be encouraged to bring children to Tellis to see how neighborhood drugstores looked and served in the past. This quaint and yet viable venue should be included in city guidebooks. As the daughter of a pharmacy owner and pharmacist — my dad graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1917 — I was quite impressed that an old pharmacy like this still exists. Of course Tellis is now streamlined to today's standards, without the lovely mahogany showcases with sliding plate glass and the soda fountain that were once there. But enough remains that young people would glean some insight into what it was like back in the 1950s before chain drugstores took business from independent pharmacies. You know how we all get excited about an independent bookstore. This is the same sort of gratifying experience for the shopper. The proprietors of Tellis Pharmacy deserve the support of the community in their effort to preserve some of the fabric of our past.
