Principal accused of assault not returning to post

The Post and Courier
Friday, May 9, 2008

Christy Thompson will not be returning to her former job as principal of Jane Edwards Elementary School, Charleston County Schools Superintendent Nancy McGinley said Thursday.

Christy Thompson

Christy Thompson

Thompson has been charged with simple assault and is accused of grabbing a teacher's arm during an argument about the teacher's evaluation. She is on requested leave from the Charleston County School District, McGinley said.

The alleged assault happened March 13, but formal charges weren't filed until more than a month later. Penalties for conviction of simple assault include up to 30 days in jail or a fine.

McGinley said Thompson could return to the district if she chooses and that she would be offered a teaching contract. That could change if the district receives additional information about the situation, she said.

The district investigated the incident separately

from police, and that investigation has been completed, McGinley said. She could not release further details because it's a personnel matter, she said.

According to police reports and the arrest affidavit:

The teacher involved in the case, Pamela Zbrzeznj, had a copy of her original evaluation, and she went to the principal's office to ask why her evaluation was changed from a passing one to a failing one. The principal took the copy of the original evaluation and turned to her computer, and the teacher reached around the principal, took the evaluation back and headed toward the office door.

As Zbrzeznj opened the door, the principal grabbed the teacher by the arm to keep her from leaving the office and retrieve the copy of the original evaluation.

Witnesses at the Edisto Island school gave written statements that they saw Thompson grab the teacher's arm.

As part of her bond, Thompson was ordered not to have contact with Zbrzeznj or go within one block of Zbrzeznj's home or workplace. Zbrzeznj could not be reached for comment.

Margie Pizarro, an attorney with Savage & Savage, the firm representing Thompson, raised questions about whether sufficient probable cause existed for the charges that were filed, and she said it appears that there was a problem with the merits of the allegation.

Thompson, not the school district, hired Savage & Savage.

Pizarro did not talk about the specific allegations but said Thompson was in a difficult position with the teacher involved in the case, and there are documented problems that Thompson had with her.

"We look forward to our day in court," she said.

This isn't the first time Thompson has had conflict with the teachers at the school. After last year — her first on the job — 11 of the school's 15 teachers did not return. Many said she acted inappropriately and with poor judgment. District officials said those incidents have been investigated but did not release their findings.

Susan Miles is the interim principal at Jane Edwards Elementary. Miles has nearly 30 years of experience in education, most recently working as the social studies learning specialist at the district office.

McGinley said the district will hire a new principal for next school year.

I originally agreed with the school district that, based on the details of the incident, she be allowed to return- assuming this was her first incident. But then I read, “After last year — her first on the job — 11 of the school's 15 teachers did not return. Many said she acted inappropriately and with poor judgment.” When you lose 73% of your staff in one year- and I understand that good teachers are difficult to find in the first place- you have to think, “Maybe this isn’t the right job for her.” And now you have yet another example of poor judgment. So why the heck would they still offer her a job?? I’m just glad Thompson took herself out. Apparently she can see the problem that the school board can’t.

As Zbrzeznj opened the door, the principal grabbed the teacher by the arm to keep her from leaving the office and retrieve the copy of the original evaluation.

This goes beyond simple assault. There are still other charges that should be brought against that principal that are much more serious. Then there is the civil liability.

Nancy Cook is one of the causes for these attitudes by the adminstrators.

No wonder our students learn so little academics but in turn learn inappropriate behaviors. Why does CCSD put up with such poor performance then reward it on top of that? CCSD shares a lot of blame here.

Black school admin grabbing a white teachers arm. The principal must be a member of Rev Wrights church.

This statement blaming Nancy Cook for incidents of this nature is totally ludicrous. Should we also blame the sherrif for all of the crimes that are being commited ?

"and the teacher reached around the principal, took the evaluation back and headed toward the office door."

In the days of discipline that would be considered "taking something out of another's hands"~ what was the scene of "reaching around the principal" and "removing the paper out of someone else's hands"?

Seems they BOTH had behavior not forthcoming of ADULTS!

naacp will be all over this and the white teacher will be fired and this horrible principal will have her job back just watch you will see. i know from my own experience as a tortured white student who was set on fire for being a white kid in a 90% black middle school. the principal a.j. heyer threatened me with the naacp if i reported the abuse i was enduring. she had visible evidence and called me a liar and said she would see to it i was locked up. seems no different except its a white teacher. somehow the white teacher will be the bad guy despite past problems

i feel for this teacher she should have gone to the district for help not the cops

HmmmmmBlack principal and white teacher. If the roles were reversed the Rev. Wrong, Rev. ginger ale dullton, ole' Jesse and "Free the Jenna 6" crowd would be a marching. Not nice to grab anyone's arm in a conflict. Fire the principal; problem resolved.

Once again I'm confused as to why race has even been brought up in this instance. I haven't yet read anything in the reporting that makes this a racial issue.

Smart_Enough_2_Know_Better, they said they'd only allow her back as a teacher. They're probably thinking "non-supervisory position". Of course, they are forgetting that teachers supervise kids and that the behavior of the teacher can have a huge impact on the kids.

Posted by RTC on May 9, 2008 at 8:42 a.m. (Suggest removal)

With 11 out of 15 teachers not returning after last year, the school district should have seen that there was a problem.
I wonder if they even bothered looking into why these teachers refused to return.

Posted by Early on May 9, 2008 at 9:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

RTC, you are right and, my recollection was that CCSD administration actually took side with the now infamous principle but like you said, should have seen the writing on the wall.

Sounds like all they needed was a pool of Jello and some bikinis and it would have been on! Both were extremely unprofessional in handling the issue, but unwelcome touching of any kind is never acceptable, be it from a man or woman.

I'm not sure the teacher acted in any wrong way. If I walk in to your office with a piece of paper in my hand and you take it from me, I'm going to take it back. Especially if it's the only proof I have that I've been wronged. The paper did not belong to the school, it belong to the teacher.

ColdBeer: "Once again I'm confused as to why race has even been brought up in this instance. I haven't yet read anything in the reporting that makes this a racial issue."

Because some people like to keep the race fires burning! At any rate, black or white, the principal didn't have the right to put her hands on the teacher. That was just poor behavior. Also, for her to lose all of those teachers after one school year, she must be some Grade A Bitch!!!

Posted by eyfigueroa on May 9, 2008 at 9:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)

jca: your story explains a lot. thank you for helping me to better understand you.

Removing Ms. Thompson from a supervisory position is good policy especially considering that she has only been charged and has not stood trial or admitted guilt. If she is found guilty or admits guilt she should immediately be fired from CCSD.

This type of behavior cannot be tolerated. If management is not in control neither will the rest of the organization.

Posted by wallytowngrl on May 9, 2008 at 10:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

seems to me the principle didn't like this teacher and changed things her way when confronted with proof said principle wanted to get rid of the evidence. hmmm will have to wait and see what happens in court. now I see why we have children going bad not always the parent fault is it now ??????????

Posted by LowcountryMoose on May 9, 2008 at 10:11 a.m. (Suggest removal)

So she doesn't have the wherewithal to be a principal, but she can be a teacher? WTF? I'm going to call the Affirmative Action - NAACP - ACLU hotline and find out their take on this. I suggest you do the same. The number is 1-800-COR-RUPT.

Colbeer- Its always good to put down another set of folks to make yourself look good. You see the same posters time and time again only posting on stories that has to do with illegal immigration, and black people. They are a group of simple minded people that are scared to know someone else because of their different skin color, hair, language, or culture beliefs. So in short they are Backyard freaks!

Anyway this principal sounds like she could not work with people regardless of race. I bet she lost black and white teachers so why would the NAACP get involved? Oh yeah because some of yall think only in black and white and don't know how to fully comprehend what you read. My bad I forgot about the handicaps some of you all face.

I don't think it would be a good decision to put her into the classroom either.

wallytowngrl, My kids went to highschool at Stratford. Stratford has PLENTY of bad teachers and PLENTY of bad administrators. Being the involved parent that I am, I made sure that my children understood the difference between right and wrong. A good parent can overcome anything the school system throws at them... even substandard education.

Under federal and state law, kidnapping, in part, is defined as the "confining" of a person to a controlled space.

"As Zbrzeznj opened the door, the principal grabbed the teacher by the arm to keep her from leaving the office".

Posted by Thomas1776 on May 9, 2008 at 12:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)

SECTION 16-3-910 South Carolina Code of Laws 1976, as amended. Kidnapping:

Whoever shall unlawfully SEIZE, CONFINE, inveigle, decoy, kidnap, abduct or carry away any other person by any means whatsoever without authority of law, except when a minor is seized or taken by his parent, is guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, must be imprisoned for a period not to exceed thirty years unless sentenced for murder as provided in Section 16-3-20.

18 United State Code Section 1201:

Section 1201. Kidnapping

(a) Whoever unlawfully SEIZES, CONFINES ... .. .

shall be punished by imprisonment for any term of years or for life.

The Pro wrestler seized the teacher and did in fact confine her unlawfully which also constitutes "False Imprisonment."

Will the principal be charged with "Kidnapping" ?

I wasn't going to say this but I just couldn't hold this in any longer. A lot of the "non-Black" posters are now taking on the characteristic that they blame all Blacks of having. The genes that they so despise. You know the "woe is me" and the "they did because I'm (insert race/ethnicity here)", and the "if that was a (insert race/ethnicity here) person things would be handled differently" genes. My, how the tides have turned.

I don't know about kidnapping, but SC has a state law on Unlaw Detention. I keep waiting for one of the Wal-Mart greeters to grab my arm and try and stop me when I refuse to show them my receipt :) The old ones would never do that, but every once in a while they put a young kid at the door and he might just make that mistake.

I was involved in some of the incidents last year at Jane Edwards and for CC to say that a full investigation was done is wrong. I was never questioned about any the events that I brought to their attention and neither were a lot of other people. So CC don't lie and say a FULL INVESTIGATION was done. CC has been to busy covering their butts than to deal with the real issue, which is the proper education of our children. How can children be properly taught were CC is allowing our administrators to behave in the way that this WOMEN was allowed to behave in this school

As a former teacher at Jane Edwards School, I can tell you that there is probably more to this story than what has been said or reported. I am one of the 11/15 teachers that left the school last year. We did not leave because we wanted. We loved the children, the community, and the school. We were either forced to leave or left for health reasons. Either way, most of the teachers who left are not where they want to be right now. They would prefer to be back on Edisto even if it means driving over an hour to get to work. We were devoted, but strained by the leadership of Thompson, or rather the lack of leadership from Thompson. She ran the school on fear and intimidation. Teachers filed numerous complaints with Earl Choice, the associate superintendent, Nancy McGinley, and with human resources. These complaints started in September of 2006. Nothing was ever done. By the end of the year, we were devastated by stress and lack of support from CCSD. The last day of school was filled with drama, created by Thompson who caused a panic attack for a teacher by threatening to make sure she was not paid by the district. The panic attack became so severe that teachers tried to call 911 from the classroom telephone, but Thompson hung up the phone and walked back to her office. The teacher in the meantime, was vomiting, eyes rolling into the back of her head, and not breathing at one point. The office called the fire department who showed up and couldn't do anything for the teacher. The fire department had to contact EMS. It took over an hour for EMS to stabilize the teacher. A police report was filed, but no criminal charges were pressed. Because in SC it is not illegal to interfere with a 911 call. CCSD did what they called an "investigation" but nothing was done and Thompson continued as principal for the 2007-08 school year. This issue is not one of race, but of competency. The first teacher who left in the 06-07 school year was African American. Thompson is incompetent and lacks the leadership qualities needed to improve the education of our young children and provide a safe and stable working environment for the faculty and staff of any school. She should be fired. The only reason she is still there is because CCSD is trying to avoid any type of lawsuit from Thompson.

DARN IT!!!!!

I missed all of the fun! Well it’s the end of the day and I’m glad I got to read some posts that actually made me chuckle.

Girleygirl: I know exactly what you mean! I’ve been divorced for so long that I was hoping Early was being for real!!!! Love being around the kids but Lordy a Mr. Studly on a beach with some cold ones sounds sooooooo nice right now.

Lolololol

It’s good to ‘laugh’ today. Some earlier posts on other articles today really depressed me. Now I’m off to grab some steaks from the commissary and stop by Texaco for some overpriced Heinekens and TRULY OVERPRICED gasoline.

Y’all take ‘ya hear!

Girleygirl.. your ex is having the biggest party ever. He's way happier than you are.

Very sad...A handful of posters have been allowed to distract from the main issue; what is the remedy for the principal? I noticed it wasn't a 6'5" white teacher she restrained. I repeat fire the principal, issue resolved.
