A developer wants to build 25 condominiums and a 132-room hotel on the three acres that the former Grace Chapel sits on. The site is on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard as you enter Mount Pleasant from Charleston.

The Town Council Planning and Development Committee gave the thumbs up to the three-acre project at the site of the old Grace Chapel where the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge meets the northbound boulevard. The abandoned building has become an eyesore, officials said, and the new development is a chance to create a more favorable first impression of the town.

Town Council will vote on the project May 13.

Town officials have said that at least four development groups are interested in more than 100 acres near the base of the bridge. Council recently raised the allowable height of buildings near the bridge to 80 feet. The town plans other incentives for a hospitality district near the bridge that will be part of its boulevard redevelopment effort.

The Grace Chapel property, also the former location of Quincy's steakhouse, sold for $1.97 million to Robert L. Clement III and L. Robert Demoura in the summer of 2006, according to Charleston County records. The developers have not yet revealed which hotel company will be located at the property.

I'd look across the street at the Tides and get the heck out of this idea.

Two marginal developers are about to watch their money go bye-bye.

The only reason tourists stay in Mount Pleasant is they don't have the cash to stay in Charleston.

Hey, let's go to NY, but we'll stay in NJ.

More condos in Mt Pleasant, what a great idea, because there aren't enough on the market already. The town's new slogan will be "Mount Pleasant: We didn't set out to become Myrtle Beach, it just happened." Way to go Harry and the council clowns.

A community church should be put BACK on the property, would benefit more than a dog park!

I also have to comment that flood insurance will be paid by your tax dollars. It is amazing to me that if you live in the highest wind/ flood zone, other people pay for your insurance. If you live 5 miles from the coast, insurance companies are cancelling people right and left for "high risk"

After 5 minutes of research, telephone call, this project will never happen. Can't get a loan.

Uh-oh! Before you start building, make sure you are going to be able to access the city water system.
