Bake sale fights childhood hunger

The Summerville Farmers Market will conduct the second annual statewide Certified S.C. Grown Bake Sale 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at 218 North Main St. to showcase locally grown produce and to show support for ending childhood hunger.

The national Great American Bake Sale campaign, which mobilizes people to help end childhood hunger by holding bake sales in their communities ends June 30. Sponsored by Share Our Strength and the Food Network, the event has provided more than 5.3 million meals to low-income children, said Hugh Weathers, S.C. commissioner of agriculture.

"Our state's community-based farmers markets are ideal places to hold bake sales. Customers are already looking for food, and they're ready to shop and willing to help such a worthy cause," Weathers said.

The Summerville Farmers Market has been operating for 17 years under the guidance of 85-year-old manager Walter Limehouse and his wife, Barbara. The sale is supported totally by volunteers. Bake sale items are provided by the farmers and vendors as well as area supermarket retailers and restaurants. Food Lion, Piggly Wiggly, Bi-Lo, Mustardseed Restaurant, Ryan's, Carolina Cafe, Simply Delicious and Sweetwater Grill all contributed to the event to make it a success. The local Ken- tucky Fried Chicken donated biscuits.
