Artemis, owned by John Darby of Charleston, continues to occupy the top spot in the 50th Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in Morehead City, N.C. The 50-foot custom express boat built by Sea Island Boatworks of Charleston, caught a 640-pound blue marlin Monday that is the heaviest of six fish that have been boated during the tournament. With 136 of the 176 entries fishing Thursday, 49 billfish were released including 34 blue marlin but no billfish brought to the dock. The Artemis crew, which consists of Darby, Capt. Bucky Copleston, Darryl Reyna, J.C. Darby, Eric Burn, Robbie Freeman, Jim Bryan and Michael Provow, used its second lay day in the tournament and will fish today and Saturday. "It's been very nerve-wracking, pins and needles," Darby said Thursday. Artemis won the 2007 South Carolina Governor's Cup Billfishing Series. The total purse for this year's event is a record $1,854,575. Second place belongs to Melina, out of Moorestown, N.J., with a 555.5-pound blue marlin, while Lady Lou V out of San Juan, Puerto Rico is third with 553.5 pounds. Artemis is gunning to become the second straight Charleston boat to win the event, the most prestigious billfish tournament on the East Coast. Charleston boats have won three of the previous eight Big Rock titles.

Looks like the weather off Morehead City may work out to favor Bucky and the guys.
