Collins gets big ink in Senate write-in bid

SUMMERVILLE — A week after reaching the required number of signatures on a petition to run as a write-in candidate for the state Senate District 38 seat, a delighted Bill Collins on Monday turned in the petition with half-again as many more names. Collins needed to give the state election commission 3,155 signatures of registered voters by tomorrow to get on the November ballot as an independent. He collected 4,696, he said. The signatures still must be validated. Former Sen. Mike Rose, Collins' prospective opponent, said he would scrutinize the signatures to see which one were valid.
