Photo GalleryCane Bay vs Hanahan football Cane Bay plays its first game Friday against Hanahan Friday. HANAHAN 67, CANE BAY 0 SUMMERVILLE — Jeff Cruce knew there would be nights like this. He just hopes there aren't too many of them. Cruce is the coach of Cane Bay, the new high school in Berkeley County. The team has only freshmen and sophomores on the roster, so it's going to experience some growing pains. That was evident Friday night when the Cobras made mistakes galore in the first game of their brief history, a 67-0 loss to Hanahan. "I'm not disappointed," Cruce said. "We knew what we were getting into when we signed up for the job. What you saw was a mature team of juniors and seniors beat a young team of freshmen and sophomores. We won the jayvee game (28-15) last night against kids our own age. So I'm not disappointed." Cruce coached Hanahan for 12 years, building the Hawks into a state power. Charlie Patterson is now in charge of the Hawks, and his team also showed early-season jitters, having three touchdowns wiped out by penalties. Still, the Hawks made a nice recovery from last week's 12-10 loss to the Columbia Capitals. The game was decided in the final minute when Columbia recovered a botched punt snap at the Hawks' 10-yard line and parlayed it into a score. "We just focused on getting better this week," said Patterson, who came to Hanahan after a stint as an assistant coach at Gaffney. "I thought the kids had a great week of practice. I was worried about how they responded. But they did well. I think we were a little too jacked up early in the game." Friday, the Hawks made sure they wouldn't be victims of another close encounter. They scored five touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 41-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Cane Bay ran 21 plays in the first half, and all the Cobras had to show for it was minus-1 yard in total offense. The Cobras had three turnovers and were called for three penalties. They finished with 41 yards in total offense, all in the air. "It's got to be awful to lose like that," Patterson said. "But I think they will be OK. We've got juniors and seniors and they have ninth- and 10th-graders. We should win." Hanahan's Monte Richardson keyed the Hawks' first-half explosion with three touchdowns. The 5-5 sophomore finished with 113 yards rushing on only six carries, and added a 37-yard TD reception. Hanahan had 80 yards in penalties in the first half, but overcame that with 240 yards in total offense in the first 24 minutes. Jamal Lockwood also had a big game, rushing 14 times for 106 yards. Hanahan quarterback Bryce Hines completed 7 of 13 passes for 59 yards. He threw touchdowns passes of 17 and 10 yards to Al Little. The Hawks finished with 494 yards in total offense, including 374 on the ground.
