Condos finally go up published 10/07/07

With three-bedroom condos on the peninsula priced at $150,000 or less, it's no wonder there's a waiting list.

A long-delayed city development of 42 condominiums for first-time home buyers is well under way near Wagener Terrace, in a neighborhood where pricey single-family homes have replaced a low-income apartment complex.

The condos on Alberta Street are part of a city agreement reached after The Beach Company decided to demolish Shoreview, a privately-owned low-income apartment complex, and build a new community called Longborough.

Amid public concern about the loss of affordable housing, in 2001 the city struck a deal to buy up to 50,000 square feet of new housing for $125 per square foot.

The 2001 agreement said permits for construction would be issued by the end of 2004, but there have been many delays. Now, the city expects The Cottages at Longborough to receive occupancy certificates in March of 2009.
