Sporting notes compiled while hailing New York cabbies:

--We all know VMI Keydets can't lie, cheat or steal. So when first-year coach Sparky Woods asked his quarterback how he liked the new offense, the young man answered, "Sir, I don't like it, sir."

--Let's see, Georgia has five players suspended for its season opener against Georgia Southern, which has eight players suspended. Should be a great game.

--Meanwhile, UGA fans are nervous about the Bulldogs being ranked as the preseason No. 1 pick. Until they get past the South Carolina game, they should be.

--I saw (Bull's Bay golf pro) Terry Florence's beautiful daughter, Margaret Anne, playing the female lead in "The Fantasticks" on Broadway last week. What a talent.

--I'll never say anything bad about New York cab drivers after I left my computer bag in a cab at LaGuardia and the cabbie tracked me down in the airport to give it back. Whew.

--Summerville's John McKissick has been coaching high school football for 57 years. He started in 1952 when Harry Truman was president, cigarettes sold for 19 cents a pack and a top song of the day was "Jambalaya."

"Goodbye Joe, me gotta go, me-oh my-oh/ Me gotta go pole the pirogue down the bayou/ Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-oh/ Son of a gun we'll have good fun on the bayou." "Jambalaya," Hank Williams.

"I say high, you say low/ You say why, and I say I don't know, oh no." "Hello Goodbye," The Beatles.

Shameless plugs

--There's still time to sign up for the Burger Prostate Challenge sponsored by the Roper St. Francis Cancer Center. It's being held Sept. 9 at West Ashley High School to promote prostate cancer awareness.

It'll be fun. Register at www.rsfh.com.

--Don't forget the fourth season of the "Beat Burger" college picks contest cranks up next week. This year you can even play online at Charleston.net.

--Also, my first novel, "Swallow Savannah," is due out Nov. 1. Please look for it in a book store near you.

--OK, enough about me talking about me. What do you think about me?

"You know talking about you makes me smile/ But every once in a while/ I wanna talk about me." "I Wanna Talk About Me," Toby Keith.
