Daredevil kite surfer has Charleston ties

The most famous battered and bruised kite surfer in America is recovering from his wounds, and it appears he spent some of his life in Charleston.

Kevin Kearney, 28, now of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., drew instant fame this week when video of him flying about in Tropical Storm Fay's winds aired on television and YouTube.

In the footage, Kearney, who was described in media reports as "just another random daredevil at the beach Monday," got a wild ride when Fay's gusting winds blew him across the beach, over a roadway and into a building. The flight of more than 100 feet was just a few seconds in duration, and was captured by a TV crew prepping for a live report on the storm.

Kearney was recovering in Broward General Medical Center where his condition was upgraded from critical to serious Wednesday, said Kathie Capstack, hospital spokeswoman.

Reports from Florida say Kearney grew up in Charleston and graduated from Penn State University. Repeated attempts to reach his family members, who were with him in the hospital, went unanswered.

Dan Floyd, who opened the OliNah outdoor store on Isle of Palms, said he knew of Kearney's kite-surfing thrills from when he lived in South Florida, and board-sport lovers would congregate at events.

That incident was like passing an accident on the highway - I don't WANT to look, but sometimes I look, and then I feel nauseous and hate myself for exposing myself to that.

I thought I was just having an ol' woman moment when I first saw that video. Apparently, most of us are in total agreement of what a total dumb a** this man IS (not just at the time of his stunt).

I think it was funny as heck and the fool is very lucky. If the wind had took him out to sea, he would have been shark bait.

CB, this guy can't be a redneck. A real redneck wouldn't have spent the money on kite. He'd use his girlfriend's bra with the FFF-size cups. Airborne!

He graduated from Penn State, yet he can't figure out what a kite in tropical force winds will do? To get through life it's good to have some common sense and this fool has none. So glad my surfer son attends C of C!

I resent that he is in any way connected to our community. We have enough stupid people of our own here to drain our resources and don't want to seem like we are cultivating idiots to the rest of the Nation, else more of them will transplant here.
