Peddlers banned from King Street sidewalks

Sidewalk peddlers have been banned from King Street in Charleston, in a decision that city officials said was necessary for pedestrian safety. The measure approved by City Council late Tuesday evening does not apply to vendors who rent spaces on the street from the city, or the "palmetto artisans" who are licensed to sell palm-frond roses, but it further restricts roving peddlers who sell drinks and snacks from bicycle carts. The roving peddlers -- city rules say they have to keep moving unless they are making a sale -- were already banned in all areas below Broad Street, and in or around Waterfront Park, the Market area, the South Carolina Aquarium, and the Visitors Information Center. Police Chief Greg Mullen and Mayor Joe Riley said they have witnessed pedestrians having to step out into King Street to get around sidewalk peddlers, who Mullen said routinely flout the rules requiring them to keep moving. The city has 16 spots reserved for vendors in parks and on streets including King Street. Of those, five have been leased this year and the rest are available for peddlers to use on a first-come, first-served basis. Those who don't use one of the 16 locations offered by the city are allowed to roam around selling their wares, so long as they don't go into the prohibited areas. Peddlers are required to have a business license and a $450 permit. Read more in tomorrow's editions of The Post and Courier.

Yeah, just what we need, an ordinance that puts people out of jobs in a bad economy. And it is rather scary that because the mayor and police chief have an issue with something, boom, there is an ordinance to make it illegal?

Chief Mullen might be the worst police chief in South Carolina. I can't wait to see what Alumni have to say when they find out he has banned tailgating up until 2 hours before/after Citadel football games this year. I wonder why it isn't like that at any other Public College in the state? Hey Chief Mullen, do us all a favor and do some real police work for a change and leave the honest, hard working people alone.

I am trying to read the story entitled "Tech Firm Files for Bankruptcy." However, when I click on that headline, it brings me to this story. That's strange.

I cannot remember when the last time I went downtown. I bet I have not spent one red cent in the city of Charleston in probably close to 15 years. I lived there thru my early 20's but to me it's nothing any more to the small town it used to be.

They should ban those people selling "Palmetto" roses. It's a freaking knot made out of a leaf. Anyone can make those... $5 for a piece of a leaf. Oh and then they beg you for additional money.
Not to mention all the beggars that are allowed to sit there in the sidewalks to beg for alcohol/crack money.
They should ban the horses carriages. The smell of horse piss on a hot summer day is enough to be a health hazard to me...

what they should ban is hillbillies wearing cut off shirts and shorts that are 3 sizes too small. that's offensive

ROTFLMAO@Chucktownian!!!!
That was hilarious!
As for this ordinance this is absolutely asinine.
Who was the smart ass that came up with this one?
Why would you want to take away these people income?
What, you jerks need to focus on is the excessive amount of crime that seems to permeate the streets of Charleston/North Chuck.
Find a cause that is worth while and leave the law abiding citizens that’s trying to earn a living honestly alone....
