Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Austin Cody of North Charleston failed to get one of the final two spots in today's 64-player match play portion of the U.S. Amateur being played at Pinehurst Country Club. Cody, 16, was one of 26 players going for the final two spots in sudden death this morning. Also missing out was recent South Carolina Amateur champion Lee Palms of Greenville.
The 26 players had tied for 63rd at 5-over-par 145 during qualifying rounds held at Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 4.
The first player to advance in the playoff was Jason Bittick of Coto De Caza, Calif., who meets University of South Carolina signee Wesley Bryan of Chapin. The other player to advance was Ross Beal of Uniontown, Ohio, who faces medalist Robbie Fillmore of Provo, Utah.
