Whitesville firefighters responded to a bus fire on U.S. 176 early Monday that delayed several students' arrival on their first day at Cane Bay High School. No one was hurt and no tardies were issued. Authorities say the fire originated in the rear engine.

A bus carrying about 40 students to the new Cane Bay High School caught fire this morning, delaying traffic on U.S. 176 for about an hour.

None of the students on board were hurt or in danger, Whitesville Fire Chief Tim Stephenson said.

Stephenson said the fire started around 6:30 a.m. on U.S. 176. He said someone in a car noticed flames coming from the rear engine of the bus.

School officials said some of the students on board noticed the bus began jerking and then smoking. The bus pulled over to the side of the road and students boarded a second bus a short time later.

Parents said they were stuck in traffic for as much as an hour as they waited for authorities to re-open the two-lane highway. Some traffic was re-routed.

Students who arrived late at the new high school at 1624 State Road in Summerville were not marked late because of the incident.

School officials said there were no other problems this morning.

Glad to see Whitesville Volunteer Fire Department was able to handle it without depleting all the other area departments due to lack of manpower!

cb im sure this bus has been service for about 15 years, since this bus is gone now, they will find a nice, new one to put them on. yeah right, it will be older and in worse shape than this bus.

The Bottom Line is No Children were Hurt. Thank goodness the Bus driver took the kids off the bus in Time.

Newt - They had to cut the budget for new buses. How else would they fund classes for abstinence and creationism?

Very true ChrisPia!
The children weren't hurt and that's good!

It was really kind of them not to mark the kids tardy.
