Linda Ketner First District congressional challenger Linda Ketner criticized a bill by U.S. Rep. Henry Brown that would help future homeowners on an undeveloped area of Kiawah Island qualify for federal flood insurance. Calling Brown's bill "an abuse of power" at the expense of taxpayers, Ketner urged area residents to fight the bill's passage. A Democrat, Ketner said she might attend a congressional hearing on the bill Sept. 10, in Washington, D.C., "not only as a candidate, but as a citizen. I think it's incumbent that we stand up against this." Brown, R-S.C., recently introduced a bill that would remove land at the southwestern end of Kiawah Island from what's known as the Coastal Barrier Resources System. Created in 1982 to discourage development on barrier islands, land inside this zone is ineligible for federally subsidized flood insurance. Kiawah Development Partners, owner of the land, wants to build about 50 homes on the spit south of the county's Beachwalker Park. Last week, Brown defended the bill, saying he did it at the request of the Town of Kiawah. In exchange for the beachfront land around Capt. Sam's Inlet, the bill would add 25 acres of high ground further inland and 153 acres of marsh, a net gain that would benefit the environment, Brown said. Ketner said removing the land on Capt. Sam's Inlet would not enhance the ecological value of the area required by federal law and would instead encourage the area's development by making future homes eligible for federal flood insurance, which is much cheaper than private coverage. |

There are others as well. Congressman Brown, it is time to get better press. This is worse than when you set the national forest on fire. Even if it is not true, people usually remember their congressman setting national forests on fire and giving taxpayers money to the rich to fund their beachhouse flood insurance. Who does your PR? I hope you hang on in a plus 25 Rep district and have a good 2 years, because the party won't come have a talk with you, you will just see real name in the primary in 2 years.

I don't know much about Ketner, but Brown is a "professional politician" whom the voters need to send home because he is and has been PART OF THE PROBLEM in Washington and Columbia before that. This debacle on Kiawah has exposed him as a typical politician who "has a real problem telling the truth" and who's probably "in the pocket" of this developer and others. I'm a republican who has just had enough of this guy's "behind the scenes" shennanigans.

Every post above mine says the same thing, HE MUST GO. Then why will he win? He won handidly in the primary and so did Lindsey Graham. He is a do nothing. At least when Gov Mark held that ofc he stood for something, Cousin Arthur before him too. He has been and will always be for the big business and not the voters. I have repeatedly sent e-mails about illegal immigration issues and have never even got an e-mail back from him.

I like that zoom: James "Grand Master Flash" Clyburn. Or how about James "Geechee Corridor" Clyburn? Is Ketner a candidate who will make Brown look like a liberal? Except for Libertarians the parties don't stand for anything anymore as exemplified by Henry "H. Rap" Brown. Yes johnq2, Brown after hearing our protests against the bill has not apologized and gotten on TV to tell us he is withdrawing it, as far as I know. I sent Brown an email about this debacle and have not gotten anything back from him or his office or wherever they go to. Ketner must be reading Charleston.net. I hope Brown is too and will agree with us that this welfare for the rich/building homes in the sand bill must go in the trash can. Government should not be in the business of subsidizing any kind of insurance.

Zoom, you're going to burst a vessel if you're not careful. We understand you're frustration by the shouting you're writing(CAP LETTERS), but you're opinion would be more effective if you tone it down a little. It would also be much easier for us to read.:)
Unfortunately, I don't have a dog in this fight. But we have someone in the Upstate that fits Brown's profile. State rep William Sandifer fits the bill. Pro-pol, as I call him. I'd like to see him pro-pelled out of office. But he has too many people fooled. So does Brown, it appears.

If what Congressman Brown says is true about not knowing that developers were involved, I'd be mad as fire if it were me they pulled the wool over. A good rule of thumb when building on a barrier island on the Carolina Coast is that if there isn't a palmeto, oak or ceder tree on it over 20 years old, its not a good place to build a house. Its good for one thing though. Its a very nice beach.

I love how all the "sheep" in America just blindly follow these liberal politicians. Even if i grant you this one instance of Brown's judgment (no politician has ever been perfect), he is still a value lead conservative and at the very least the best choice for November. Linda Ketner and her Democratic Cronies (yes Obama especially you) are what is wrong with this nation today. Let Brown's record speak for him, not one media crazed story about this land. I am still voting for Brown in November, and I would never vote for Linda Ketner who would be a disgrace to the people of South Carolina. Do not hand over this District (it might already be too late for this country) to a Democratic party who's value resemble a modern day "Sodom and Gomorrah."

Real purchasing power and real wages declined for the average American, while it increased for the wealthiest 5%. In sum, while idiots like you and the goose-stepping evangelical republicans have concentrated on denying rights to a small minority, you have destroyed the ability of this country to address the real problems and challenges of the 21st century.
