Handgun bullet hits man in face

The Post and Courier
Sunday, August 17, 2008

A 21-year-old Marine was shot in the face by a fellow Marine during a party near Beaufort and rushed to the Medical University Hospital where his condition was unknown late Saturday, officials said.

Witnesses told investigators that Lance Cpl. Patrick King, 21, brought a handgun to a party in a neighborhood near the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort.

Witnesses said King didn't think the weapon was loaded when he pointed it at his friend.

King's gun went off, and a bullet struck the other Marine in the head, critically injuring him, according to statement from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Witnesses told investigators that the

two were not arguing and that the shooting didn't appear to be intentional, the Sheriff's Office said.

The incident happened about 1 a.m. Saturday, and the injured Marine was transported by ambulance to Beaufort Memorial Hospital and then to Medical University Hospital.

The Marine's name was being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

Both Marines were in the same unit at the Air Station, a Marine Corps spokesman said.

King was being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center late Saturday on a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill.

I hope he'll be okay!

Common sense folks - guns and alcohol don't mix. If you're playing with one, don't touch the other.

What kind of stupid headline is this? If the man was shot sat "man shot in the face". The way you have it worded it makes you think someone threw a bullet at him! "Handgun bullet hits man in the face" ?

What a strange headline. I would have gone for the obvious "Man shot in face" but they turn it around. "Handgun bullet hits man in face." Perhaps he walked into it?

Wow, moonpie and I were on the same wave length at the same time.

I would have to say that I too, thought the headline to be worded rather oddly.
I also believe that there is more to this story. A trained soldier, whether under the influence or not, would know not to point a weapon at someone. Common sense tells anyone never to point weapons unless you have every intention of firing them.
Why was he carrying to a social event in the first place?

A member of the US Marines should know better then to point a gun at any one not on the battle field.

As far as the headline. Maybe he threw the bullet from the handgun at the guy and hit him in the face? Nah,, stupid headline

You can thank PnC staff cuts for the headline. Folks it's just going to get worse so get used to it.

And just for Sunday laughs.....

Sign in front of a church announcing the Sunday Sermon:

"What is Hell Like?" below that:

"Come Early and Hear the Choir Practice"

Why are notifying the next of kin did he die or is not expected to live?

1. Drinking and alcohol don't mix, ever.
2. Did he have a concealed carry license?
3. He knew not to point a weapon (whether loaded or not) at someone unless he was going to shoot them.
4. Guns only "go off" when the trigger is pulled. A Marine would also know to keep your finger off the trigger until you want to shoot.
5. Nobody is going to carry an empty gun around. Do you carry paperweights around with you?

Much more to this story than what is reported, and the fact that he was charged assault and battery with intent to kill proves it.

Cid...drinking and GUNS don't mix...haha. Just messing with you. You would think a Marine would know that you always assume the gun is loaded. Also, were they maybe playing Russian Roulette or something??

LOL LtL and Cid! I didn't even catch that! Maybe I should quit mixing my drinking and alcohol?
