ST. STEPHEN — Two unidentified gunmen fired at least a dozen times into an apartment unit early Thursday, killing a 24-year-old woman sleeping inside with her boyfriend and her four children, authorities said.

Investigators weren't sure if Kimberly Jones or her boyfriend, also in his 20s, was the intended target of the attack at the Foxcreek Apartments, Police Chief John Waters said. The two adults had been in bed along with one of the children in unit 3D when the barrage of gunfire hit the window next to them a few minutes before 2 a.m.

Several family members had rushed to Medical University Hospital, where Jones died from her wound. They returned to the complex at 260 Ravenell Drive later that morning.

"It's hard to explain to the children that their mother is never coming back," said Carmen Mayes, the eldest of Jones' six siblings. "Her life ended tragically and her family wants to know why."

The police chief said that one shooter fired from the parking lot and another directly in front of the window. One shot struck Jones and others pierced the walls to a bedroom where the three other children were sleeping, he said. Nobody else was injured.

Waters declined to release information about possible suspects, citing the ongoing investigation. He said one used a rifle and another a handgun. The State Law Enforcement Division and the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office were assisting with the investigation.

Family members gather at the scene of Kimberly Jones' shooting at Foxcreek Apartments in St. Stephen on Thursday. From right are Jones' cousin Lynda Douglas and daughter Dallyce Queen, 10, Jones' sister Carmilla Collins and sister-in-law Sakenia Bryant.

The last homicide in this northern Berkeley County town of about 1,700 was the still unsolved beating death of 7-year-old Ta'Mya Grant in September. A woman was stabbed to death at a motel here in March 2006.

Police have responded to reports of shots fired at the Foxcreek Apartments but never to any shootings until Thursday, Waters said.

Paramedics were dispatched there at 1:57 a.m. and rushed Jones to MUSC, Berkeley County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Salisbury said. She died about 5:30 a.m. An autopsy revealed a gunshot wound was the cause.

Mayes described her sister as a St. Stephen native who was close to her family. She graduated from Timberland High School, attended Denmark Technical College and had recently been working at the Citi Trends clothing store in Moncks Corner.

Jones' three sisters plan to take care of the children, who range in age from 5 months to 5 years old, Mayes said. The boyfriend is the father of the youngest child, she said.

Yep I have to agree with all you said mooncalf. Look at the boyfriend he could know something.
4 kids fatherless now motherless. Now what...? Tragic cycle of violence. St Stephens is getting dangerous.

Posted by LadyTarHeel on August 15, 2008 at 6:48 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Even if the boyfriend was the target, why would someone so cruelly shoot into an apartment that they know to be occupied by children? I'm assuming they knew that since they obviously knew where the girlfriend lived. This is a very sad story and my thoughts are with her family.

st.stephens is pretty much a lawless area with chop shops and all, it's a ghost town mostly boarded up that not many care about

easy place to roll into, do this and get away unfortunately

of course the BF was the target and knows exactly who did this, but all bets are he won't say a word out of "loyalty" and he'll be the next corpse they find before too long... then they'll say, "yea he showed them by not telling the popo who it was" and it'll never get solved... another thug off of the streets

my condolences to the girl and her kids...

but a clear reason not to shack up with criminals

LadyTar these young thugs today don't have a conscious, they could care less if the house was empty or full of kids... they be diss'd n gotta cap sum1

This is a tragic story, and I can't understand why someone would to shot up a home while they are kids sleeping. These punks could not wait until this guy hits the streets. These are what you call true punks.

When they catch these punk (before the boyfriend and his crew fine them), charge them with attempted murder for each child in the home.

mooncalf and moonpie:
The story did say that the father of the baby is the boyfriend who was at the house.

Posted by SomeTruthPlease on August 15, 2008 at 7:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I did read that the boyfriend was the father of the youngest...not sure that all of the kids were "fatherless"...we already have been informed that there was one child who wasn't. I agree that in this day and time, four kids by her young age is excessive, but I'm not drawing any conclusions from what has been provided. It might possibly come out that the wrong apartment was targeted. It is also possible that the boyfriend was the target, but there's no real way of knowing, yet. My condolences to the family of Ms. Jones and her children.

Posted by SomeTruthPlease on August 15, 2008 at 7:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)

For the record, I myself, by the age of 28, was divorced, but my children were not "fatherless". I am the child of a divorce, but I was NOT "fatherless". I don't believe this article divulged anything to the effect of "Ms. Jones' oldest three children had NO father". I think an assumption is being made. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm from St. Stephen and went to school with Kim. This is such a sad situation. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

St. Stephen really isn't as bad as its reputation. The only time you hear about it is when something terrible happens. It's a pretty quiet town for the most part. Sure there's crime there, but what town doesn't have its share of it? Personally, I'd choose to live in St. Stephen over North Charleston any day.

Posted by sc4peace on August 15, 2008 at 8:49 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Anytime something like this happens - it is tragic- yes, she had a lot of children for her age..but they still lost their mother and that is the tragedy...I hope this goes to show why you should be careful who you hang out with- guilty by association- that's what my parents always taught me-unfortunately, this woman had to pay the ultimate price. If her boyfriend was the intended target and he was involved with drugs, he should be charged with something serious along with the gunmen. Those poor innocent children did not ask for this, but irresponsible adults changed their lives forever...

Posted by give_it_a_rest on August 15, 2008 at 8:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Here we go with all the assuming comments.A woman lost her life and four kids are motherless.Does it say all of her kids are fatherless?Anyways, Rest in peace Kim and I pray they find the people responsible.

Posted by willie08 on August 15, 2008 at 8:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)

What does the children's father have anything to do with anything?
A mother of 4 has been killed because of gun violence.
There are too many guns on the streets.
The same people who are pro guns have never lived in a neighborhood where the innocent is victim to gun violence.

I'm not advocation to abolish guns, as it is unconstitutional, however I do believe we need stronger gun control.

Where are the police? How could someone shoot down an entire apartment and just take off?

Posted by babyji on August 15, 2008 at 9:03 a.m. (Suggest removal)

That is so messed up..

Posted by ptmama73 on August 15, 2008 at 9:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Stronger gun control? I do not own a gun and don't want one. But a gun did not kill this young lady. A person did. I would bet that the guns used were not bought legally and gun control laws would not have prevented this tragedy.

My deepest sympathies to Ms. Jones' family.

Posted by jammer on August 15, 2008 at 9:39 a.m. (Suggest removal)

gun control? I don't think you could say anything more ignorant

since when do criminals follow gun laws? think before you type and don't believe that hype

it is well documented that firearms stop more crimes than there are crimes committed with firearms...

the average time for getting police to respond is so extended that you could be a dead victim long before any police could be there, we all have the right to self defense by the best means known to man... a legally owned and carried firearm

Posted by sc4peace on August 15, 2008 at 9:40 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Number1volsfan1- The NAACP will come out only if we find out the gunmen were white- becaue it automatically becomes a racial isssue then- they don't care if they all kill eachother- but nobody else better!

Posted by DoniaDutchess on August 15, 2008 at 10:14 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The only people who will abide by gun control laws are people who abide by the law. Criminals are called criminals for a reason: they break the law. What makes anyone think a criminal would wake up one day and go "Oh, crap! If it wasn't for those gosh darned gun control laws I could rob a convenience store today! Shoot! Guess I'll have to get a job!" Gun control isn't the answer-thugs will just have a new way to make a dishonest living by selling stolen guns and people who abide by the rules will end up getting hurt.

Posted by MooMoo on August 15, 2008 at 10:48 a.m. (Suggest removal)

This is so very sad. BUT - most of the times when crimes like these happen it involves people who have made very poor life choices. It's a pattern of bahavior seen in society over and over again: the breakdown of the traditional family coupled with criminal as well as immoral behavior that so often leads to tragedy.

My sincerest condolences to the children and all others affected by this needless but nonetheless preventable tragedy.

Cypress - you mean poster Lovely One? How do you know this?

Posted by Test2007 on August 15, 2008 at 11:19 a.m. (Suggest removal)

poor life choices? I guess maybe she should have beenspending her life commenting on sh-- on P&C that she knew sh-- about? Maybe her life would have had meaning then? Honestly, do any of you even have jobs? It is fine to talk a lot of crap but seriously I think most of you don't work at all. If P&C is your only source for entertainment or news then the world is going to hell in a handbasket.

number1 & sc4peace - Not everything is the NAACP's fault. I have said over and over. The NAACP deals with CIVIL RIGHTS. Do you even know what that means? Probably not. If you did you wouldn't be trying to attribute every crime committed by a black person to them. They don't represent every black person in America either. You sound like some of those young kids who blame the "man" for everything. You are becoming the SAME thing you talk about. Frickin idiots.

The death penalty is not a deterrent. Wake up and smell the propaganda. Someone is on death row for killing someone. Oooo maybe other people will think twice about killing others... umm no. Hasn't happened in the past 25 years. I think it is safe to say that crime has gotten worse.

This article is about a woman who was killed in her home. When they figure out the whole story we can say for sure what dynamics were behind it, drugs, jealousy, etc. Regardless, this lady is dead.

Jane - outlaws already have guns. They will ALWAYS have guns. Stop attributing violence with gangster rap and movies. Seriously, that argument is as played out as the argument that violent video games and marilyn manson drove the columbine killers over the edge. That is idiotic.

I send my condolences to the family. They CAN get over this with help.

St. Stephen isn't as bad as most think. It's a small town just like any other small town. It only gets recognized when something bad happens or when the high school wins State Championship in basketball. :)

Test, Good morning.

First, I will cede your points that yes, a young woman is dead and it is indeed tragic. There are also aspects of this story as yet untold. In these two respects, your contentions are on point.

Second, if, as I suspect, you are dismissing 'poor life choices' as having any relevance to either committing or being a victim of violent crime, then you are sadly mistaken.

Finally, your points would be far more credible if you would make them objectively with a cool head instead of resorting to emotional name calling and ridicule. In doing so, you are making yourself look less intelligent than those whose opinions you wish to refute.

Posted by Test2007 on August 15, 2008 at 11:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)

moo- I call it like I see it. I know a few people who have made "poor life choices" as you call it, and they are ALIVE and well. I also knew more good and honest folk who are no longer with us b/c of someone else's crimes. So no I am not going to generalize in that manner.

Jane - I see more violence in the 6:00 news than I see on a tv or movie. If you or your kid are stupid enough to look at a tv show or listen to music that depicts violence and then go out an act on it, then you and your kid are weak minded fools.

I am glad you are calm TODAY. Usually you are the one up in arms spouting your Obama propaganda. What? Did you get a day off from the propaganda machine today?

Posted by MooMoo on August 15, 2008 at 11:52 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It will be interesting to learn the rest of the story. My bet is that this was not a random act but that someone in that apartment was being targeted. Speculation, yes, but in reading beteen the lines, hardly farfetched.

Again, my deepest sympathy to all affected. To have a young life cut down this way is just terrible.

Posted by MooMoo on August 15, 2008 at 12:09 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Good posts Jane, as usual. Objective, well reasoned, on point.

You bet we should know about our candidates! Obama should be further ahead than he is in the polls - given the mainstream media's love affair with him, but he's not. Why? Because despite the pretty packaging, too many are unsure of who he really is and what he truly stands for.

The fact that he canceled a visit to wounded American soldiers at Lansduhl (not sure of spelling) when he learned cameras would not be allowed speaks volumes about him. That and so much more...

Well, back on topic - I really hope they catch the guys that killed this young woman.

They don't give a crap unless they can blame another race- they are not for civil rights- if they were it wouldn't be for only African Americans- so don't resort to name calling when I am entitled to my own opinion on the situation.....what happened was awful and I hope the thugs who did it rot in jail!

Let's keep the comments limited to this murder and the crime commited. I did not know this person and I am not saying the comments should be limited to condolences because this was a cousin to a regular poster. All on topic comments should be welcomed. I just don't think this article should be used for politcal debates or for someone to come in here with a grand anouncement about the dangers of other posters. They should be ashamed for doing so.

My condolences to Lovely One.

Jammer-

If you google Obama birth Certificate you will find an Israeli reporter and several other websites have picked up on this with expert fraud specialists to back up their claims. You must be born in the US to run for president, not just a citizen of the US. The rules are a bit long but essentially you must be born in 1 of the 50 states unless your mother was on a vacation or short term trip outside of the US. If the mother was outside the US for an extended period of time then you are not a natural born citizen, you are a naturalized citizen which means you can never be president.

People who live in glass houses really shouldn't throw stones. A young mother lost her life. That's what the story is about not the paternity of her children. We all will have to face a judgement some day. I pray that some of you aren't judged as harshly as you judge others. Get a life!!!!

This is a very sad story. My condolences to the family and just a general plea that until details come up people should keep their assumptions to themselves. We didn't hear any mention about her record, or any drug deal gone bad or anything of the sort. Most people know nothing about what's gone on yet, so I don't know where all the assuming is coming from. Four children are now without a mother, and that in any case is a tragedy. I hope the police are actively looking at this case, and find whomever is responsible. Let's at least wait until after the facts come up to be insensitive...

I dont know why people are making comments about Obama here, however bkeelin I have to say you are wrong, you have to be a born citizen (citizen at birth) of the United States, as in either both parents are US citizens, or if one parent is a US citizen they have to have lived in this country at least five years before the child was born abroad. I remember all of these rules when wondering how my Canadian friend somehow had automatic American citizenship (her Dad is American and she was born in Canada). The rules aren't that complicated so even if Obama WAS somehow born outside of the US (not likely and more propaganda) he was still qualify for President. The only US citizens who can't become president are "naturalized" citizens like Arnold and Madeline Albright.

Well the P&C saw fit to publish the paterity of the children which makes that part of the article and people should feel free to comment about it. I don't think anyone here was guessing as to the number of and father's of these children. This was published. I was not going to comment on any of that am will make every attempt not to do so. These glass house and judgement comments get old.

sc4peace - I read your post and others. If you want to blame NAACP for all the problems in the world then go ahead but don't get mad if I call you an idiot for it.
Actually What the hell does the NAACP have to do with this woman at all? Is her death a civil rights violation????? Most crimes committed are a community issue rather than a civil rights issue so please stick to what you know, which is yammering on P&C about sh-- you nothing about. If anyone or anything is lame it has to be a bunch of trash talking, no job having losers who get their jollies commenting on a 3rd rate newspaper like P&C all day.

No one made me thread monitor but too many times, and I will back Gadsden on this, people tend to turn this site into their own personnel chat room to have personnel conversations or discuss totally off topic issues. IT WAS MY PERSONAL OPINION that this article on a young mother being shot down in cold blood should not be used as such. There were plenty of less serious articles where that could be. I feel anything publish on this article is subject to comment. Again it was suggestion and request, not an order... by the way jammer I tend to agree with most of your posts if that’s any consolation...

Gee the cop that got waxed was divorced and remarried with kids. This murdered mom was unmarried with kids. So?

Attack the mother, great job. Well the P&C said so...so some use it as the basis for attacking. This janked up state deserves everything it gets.

Arch dude you are so right man. There ares some really unhinged folks on here. Gadsden being one of the worst offenders in here into turning threads into his own personal bullying pulpits.

Then it runs into another barackstar thread...sheesh

LOL... yea there are some unhinged people...and some of them prove it on a regular basis.

What a tragedy...
I offer my deepest condolences to this young woman family and friends.
God Bless

Are you serious? I read the news and saw the internet and it said nothing of the things that you all are speculating about. Its sad to see that in a time of such sorrow we look to negative stipulations just so that we can feel important about ourselves. Yes she was a young mother but ALL of her kids were with her and being taken of...the next time you feel like inputting try helping out instead of sitting back and do nothing...REST IN PEACE KIM (MY COUSIN) I LOVE YOU AND MY PRAYERS ARE WITH THE REST OF THE FAMILY!!!

Have a good day or night…

I am sorry for the loose also but are you suggesting we should have been helping her out with her children...No sure what you mean with your statement????

Posted by MooMoo on August 15, 2008 at 8:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

This is indeed a great tragedy and I offer my deepest sympathies to the family.

I note that most of the comments have remained on topic with but a few posts that strayed to other current events. This is in no way a violation of the terms and conditions that we all agree to abide by. Online conversation such as what occurs on message boards is just that - conversation - which from time to time can flow into other areas. And for those of you who don't like it..well, tough!

Very well said MooMoo.

I could give a rats ass about terms and conditions.. In my opinion I just feel there are some article that because of the seriousness of the article should try to remain on topic...perhaps I am wrong...

Testt2007...are you part of the NAACP? It seems that you always take up for them when someone verbablly attack them. Let me ask you this, do you think Martin Luther King Jr would be happy with the way the NAACP is being ran today?

Oh crap jeff61!Are you implying we should adopt morals and standards now?Damn...we're screwed :)

I have to agree with some of the above posters, I would much rather live in St. Stephens than North Chuck! But on the main issue, it is a very tragic event that occured, and I honestly do think that the boyfriend definetly knows who shot that apartment up. I mean, how many people can you piss off to the point that they want to kill you? i hope for the children's sake that he fully cooperates and swift justice is brought to the killer(s).

Well I have been given some info by people in the area that would explained why this happened but it is only hear say and I will not repeat it.

No morals and standards.. Again I maybe wrong and my head is in the wrong place...I don;t care if people have negative comments.. just with some articles I think the topic should be maintianed to a point... thats all

MRSCVS-thanks

To answer your earlier post: What you missed was essentially an online war of words between two posters that started in the comment section on a story that appeared in the Wednesday paper about the groups protesting the movie Tropic Thunder. It was quite the spectacle. 'Frick and Frack' got booted and all of their comments removed, BUT their online personas seemed to reappear under new usernames. Funny but also annoying and pathetic. They just could not stop and parts of it continued in the article about baggy pants yesterday.

Jeff61, you would have hated it, talk about being WAY off topic...

Posted by MooMoo on August 15, 2008 at 9:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Come on Jeff tell us! after all, it meets the standard of being on topic, right? ;)

You can always preface your remarks with "this is hearsay, but...

MooMoo,, I seen it all from start to finish LOL.. and no I did not hate it... I throw my two sense in also...The difference is.. those articles were on baggy pants and a Stiller Movie, so who cares...Look I am not saying I am not gulity of being off topic..and at times it is enjoyable.. just saying at times there is a time and place for it....
