Hall of Fame golfer Beth Daniel didn't just lend her name to the Junior Azalea golf tournament; she's helping with the efforts to elevate its stature by actively helping raise funds for the event at the place she learned to play golf, the Country Club of Charleston.

Daniel, who will captain the 2009 U.S. Solheim Cup team, said earlier this summer that it's different going out and soliciting help, but now she has become something of a salesperson. And she wants it to enjoy similar national stature as the Azalea and Senior Azalea.

This year's event will be played Tuesday and Wednesday, with 90 juniors ages 13-18 competing. Daniel will conduct a clinic and exhibition at noon Monday at the Country Club.

S.C. golfers in U.S. Am

Eleven South Carolina golfers will be participating in the upcoming U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst Country Club. According to South Carolina Golf Association executive director Happ Lathrop, Lee Palms, George, Bryan IV, Wesley Bryan, Phillip Mollica, Crawford Reeves, Mark Anderson, Robert Dargan, Austin Cody, Paul Woodbury, Baker Elmore and Jacob Burger all have qualified.

Lathrop said the previous largest S.C. contingent was six or seven when Lucas Glover, Charles Warren, D.J. Trahan and Jonathan Byrd were still in college.

The most that I remember was 6 or 7 during the Glover, Warren, Trahan and Byrd era.

Men's Interclub

Wescott Plantation was the top team in the Charleston Area Men's Interclub golf tournament played at Shadowmoss, finishing with 33 points. Shadowmoss and Coosaw Creek tied for second with 27 points. Doc Shoaff of Shadowmoss and J.T.Parker of Berkeley tied for individual honors with 13 points.

Pine Forest leads the yearly standings with 70 points, followed by: Shadowmoss, 69; Wescott, 69; Stono Ferry, 67; Coosaw Creek, 65; Legend Oaks, 61.5; Miler, 58; Dunes West, 56.5; RiverTowne, 51; Crowfield, 50.5; Charleston Municipal, 49.5; Berkeley, 45; and Patriots Point, 28.5.
