First Sgt. Mike Miller of the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office shows the hole where two children died of an apparent drowning Saturday.
SUMMERVILLE — Two boys thought to be ages 4 and 5 drowned Saturday evening in a water-filled hole behind a home under construction in a new Dorchester
County subdivision, the sheriff’s office said.
A construction crew was working on a house in the Drakesborough subdivision off U.S. Highway 78 and Old Orangeburg Road when the two boys went missing.
The children weren’t identified Saturday night, but deputies think they were with someone working on the house at 1207 Wild Goose Trail.
The hole, which resembled an eroded crater, is at the end of a ditch that was dug to lay utility lines for a coming phase of the subdivision. The hole is about 90 feet behind the house and is not separated by fencing or shrubs.
Someone in the crew noticed the children were missing around 7 p.m. The sheriff’s office got a call about 25 minutes later, 1st Sgt. Mike Miller said. Deputies arrived and found a man standing in the water, probing the bottom with a long, narrow board. When he struck something on the bottom, Lt. Joe Burnette jumped in and pulled one child out. Deputies and construction workers soon found the second child. The water was about
neck-deep on a 6-foot-tall deputy, Capt. Tom Marshall said.
Dorchester County EMS tried to revive both children at the scene.
The only signs left of the struggle were a wadded-up, wet, size 4T red Nike T-shirt with a blue collar, and a green medical glove.
The children were rushed to Summerville Medical Center. Hospital officials told deputies the children were pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m.
Beazer Homes USA Inc. is building homes in the Drakesborough subdivision.

My sincere condolences to the families of those precious boys. As a parent I cannot imagine anything more horrible and I will add the families of the boys to my prayers.

My daughter was hit by a drunk driver yesterday on her way to lowe's. She came home from the emergency room. I cannot imagine the pain these parents are feeling having lost their children. Getting the call to come to the hospital your kid was in a wreck, was terrifying. To be told your child has drowned, only they know that pain. My God be with you and yours today.

My heart goes out to the family of these two little boys! They are both at the most wonderful age a child can be.Please accept my condolences. native, I am happy to hear your daughter is O.K. Someday someone will wake up and see we need stiffer penalties on drunk driving laws.Once again my sincere condolences to this family.

Such a sad story, sympathy to the parents & families of the two little children. Southerngirl, you are right we need stiffer penalties and enforcement of DUI laws.

As a child, I would be found playing in (what we called) mud holes (such as this). It is all part of child-hood.
My sincere condolences and prayers for these two boys and their families during this extreme time of grief.
I just hope the families take some calming peace in knowing their children are in the loving care of God in heaven.

scnative sorry to hear about your daughter. Hope her recovery is swift. Nothing makes me more angry than drunk drivers getting on the road. I agree a mudhole is too tempting for young kids. But the contractors are responsible for holes they dig and there are regulations in place to prevent this very thing. I would bet this is a case of illegals not knowing the rules and also got to be laws against bringing your kids to a construction site. While very tragic also very avoidable. OSHA is going to be on this one big time and rightfully so.

I thought the same thing moonpie. The only people Ive seen with kids at a construction site appeared to be illegals who like you pointed out are unaware of the rules.Lots of unanswered questions here. How are the kids unidentified? And why was it a crew member who noticed them missing?Where in the hell were the parents?Senseless and tragic.I smell a lawsuit.

CFB just very very tragic and your right. OSHA should come down on them hard but we know they won't. I called OSHA, senators, congressmen and everyone else I could think of when I saw a very similar thing going at a construction site. Nothing happened, no one came, guys still in business!

While I am very sorry for the family of these two children, I am horrified that the parents took them out to the job and allowed them to roam without proper supervision.
My husband is a residential subcontractor and has been for 30 years. We have three children who often visited dad on the job when they were younger, but one of us was always two steps behind them because of the many dangers at a construction site. OSHA should be all over this.
I am guessing the parents did not see/understand the dangers associated with allowing young children to play unsupervised at a construction site. Unfortunately for them, ignorance or difficulties understanding the English language are not excuses. They may be held responsible for the deaths of the children...and they should be.

Based on what has bee reported so far it appears the children belonged to one of the workers on the job site.
"deputies think they were with someone working on the house"
Since the worker took the children to a construction site I would doubt the worker can sue anyone.
Not sure what Home Builder would have people working at 7 at night but I think some of the posters above have guessed it.

Yes, moonpie, blame it on the "illegals". Good job!
I'm sure the family is happy to know that a bunch of anonymous people on the Internet are showing "support". Congratulations.

whoever said this was a support board? do you really think grieving ppl look up articles in the paper searching for support? geeze, this is a message board. i seriously doubt those ppl will ever see this board!
at any rate, this was a horrible thing to happen and even tho it smacks of neglect, i feel for the parents, whoever they are.

Agreed armymom this is not a support board. What are we expected to be grief counselors? How could we not question this situation when the parents were so inept they couldnt even be found?I get frustrated because I live in a new community and people let their tiny kids just roam and ride bikes up and down the street and all around the construction. Its an accident waiting to happen.
jeff61 as far a suing I wasn't implying anyone could successfully sue, just try to.

my condolences to the family. beazer can expect to be sued for several million dollars

That makes three people in the area that have drowned in unsecured water near construction sites. Now, instead of pointing fingers, why don't we get the proper authorities to examine other sites for these kind of hazards and try to end this before it happens to someone else. My condolences to the families.

My condolences to the family.
Where were the parents? Why was there a hole not far a way with no netting or protection? Why were children brought to work unsupervised?
Good ole Moonpie so loyal in deed! No mention of race but she will still let you know how she feel about Hispanics no matter what! Good grief!

How can one dig a 6 feet deep hole in a residential neighborhood without having the job site secured? I'd
be surprised if the contract has no negligence here. For those who automatically blame this on "illegals",
shame on you! A tragedy like this should not have happened, illegal or non-illegal, if the contractor/supervisor had the mud pool fenced.

very sad indeed and the fact remains two innocent children died due to a horrible albeit preventable accident and the other fact that remains is that moonpie shows her ignorance and just goes to prove that she is indeed another slack jawed opionated ignorant yokel.

More innocent victims of a horrible, preventable accident... God Bless their innocent little souls.
And God Bless the deputies and the EMS/Fire workers. Don't you know they have a hard job.
I wonder what will happen to the parent/s who should have been watching them. Remember the toddler that was mauled and killed by his grandmother's pit bull earlier this year? It seems that I remember she was arrested for some kind of charge. I wonder if/how that turned out in court.
And there was another child that was killed by a pit bull before that because of parental negligence. Whatever happens to the parents when their child dies because of their negligence? I know that they have to live with it every day knowing that they contributed to the death of their own child, but what's to stop it from happening over and over and over...
This makes me so sad and so mad.

Protecting your child includes the ability to identify hazardous conditions and behaviors before they cause injury or death. As a parent, if we do not protect our children and the behavior leads to injury or death then Negligence has taken place by the parent. What about the lady who is currently on trial for leaving her children in her car while at work resulting in the childrens death. I worked for 35 years and never took my children to work to compromise their safety and was never allowed to by an employer. The death of these two young boys could have been prevented if only the parents had not been negligent. Who would let their 4 and 5 yr old be at a job site with no supervision?
Posted by geekguy2008 on August 3, 2008 at 3:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Why mention the home builder? A hole filled with water is no one's fault. No parental supervision. Very sad case.
Posted by jeff61 on August 3, 2008 at 3:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Aunt Bea,, this was a hole in ground that filled with rain water I would think and may not have been known to the parent, not a pit bull that someone knowingly had chained up in their back yard. I think it is a big stretch to compare the two. With that said these two young children probably should not have been there on the job site but from the photo this looks like an established neighborhood that has some additional homes being built.

There are things called trench supports morons that are required when you dig a 4 ft hole this was a 6 ft hole. Yes this broke my heart to hear of two kids drowning but it was preventable by two means. One the hole should have been barricaded, fenced, something and two you don't take your 4 and 5 yr old to a job site and let them run around while you work. And yes I assumed it was illegals because that's all the track builders hire anymore and because of the time of day this happened. They'll work all hrs of the day and night and we won't. Sorry maybe people will start taking the illegal situation more serious.

what is sad is the fact that they were found at the bottom of the hole....this means they must have been there for a long time right?

my brother is a construction worker and during the summer he used to work for builders who used flood lights around construction during the summer as it was too hot to be working nonstop during the day
he would get home at 10pm....he often worked for both legit and under the table jobs as money was tight

Gee Stephie, does anyone in your family do anything legal to earn a living.. And, although it was mentioned, I don't think the main focus here was the time this happened.

God bless the people who put a lot of effort into attempting to locate and resuscitate these boys.. So thank you to the law enforcement, fire department, EMS, and hospital staff.. These people work hard and deal with this stuff on a daily basis, and never get the appreciation they deserve.. My heart and prayers go out to the family and friends of the children..

Children of this age should not be out of sight of a responsible adult. This is not a third world country where children are caste to the wind to fend for themselves. Who knows what they might have achieved if only given the opportunity. My children do not play in the backyard without an adult present. If you cannot care for them, don't have them, as crass as this sounds it's true. The only victims here (as always) are defenseless children.

Moonpie: "They'll work all hrs of the day and night and we won't. Sorry maybe people will start taking the illegal situation more serious."
Well moonpie: An illegal Mexican was just beaten to death by two young men, shouting racial remarks. Is that working for you?
Your racist hateful remarks are being heard, loud and clear.

Moonpie I am in total agreement with you here. Someone stated that this is not a 3rd world country. Well apparently the parents are from a 3rd world country to have let this happen. So apparently moonpie was correct in her assumption.
As for what happened up there in Pennsylvania, this is different because you don't see the racial slurs happening here. they were drunk kids who were ticked off because of there were no jobs in their area because of the illegals up there. I don't condone that behavior but I would be ticked off too. In fact I am ticked off here in Charleston because our jobs are going to the illegals or you have to now spanish just to get a freaking job. It just is not right. Those young men who beat up that illegal will have their day in court and they will spend the rest of their life in jail for what they did as they should.
