Shelter takes in dozens of ill-treated animals this week

The Post and Courier
Friday, August 1, 2008

RAVENEL — A dog owner was found guilty Friday on 29 charges related to animal neglect in one of two recent cases that have increased the Charleston Animal Society's population by 42 hounds and 31 fowl.

The influx has burdened the Society's Remount Road facility, which is "packed as we can be," said Charlie Karesh, president of the Society's board of directors.

Both situations were reported to animal control after neighbors complained of the stench, which is more prominent in the heat of summer.

The dogs are all hunting breeds and include puppies. Many of the adult dogs are emaciated. Their rib cages and hip bones are prominent under their fur. Some have fur missing in areas that appear to be raw and sore. Some of their toe nails are so long that they are starting to curl at the tips, making walking difficult.

The first group of dogs was taken into protective custody Monday from 3716 Greenland Road on Johns Island. The pens were covered with feces and moldy bread and the water was filthy, a report stated.

Deputies cited the owner, Carl Gadsden, 56, for disorderly conduct. A report stated an irate Gadsden started to hose out the dirty pens and refused to stop when told to. He was also issued a total of 38 citations for ill treatment of animals and failure to vaccinate the pets.

Shoot Mr. Gadsden. Better yet, starve him and force him to live in a pen with moldy bread and filthy water in his own waste during the South Carolina summer heat. He deserves no less.

gadsden - You are a disgusting puke. Just go DIE already.

And for the family and friends of this PoS that want to defend him - Save the excuses. We've heard them all before. None of them were any good then and they're not any good now.

I am so glad something is being done about this..I have seen the most digusting images of people with their hunting dogs..they treat them like crap and think theyre supposed to starve them so they'll be more aggressive hunters..it's disgusting..I have found hunting dogs hung to death in the woods riding my horse..also I have picked up many hunting dogs off the side of the road that are so starved and with raw feet..I even picked up one that had been shot in the head..she was a sweet hound and I was able to adopt her. someone I know that hunts told me that alot of hunters shoot the dogs if they dont hunt well so they dont have to feed them..I hope this man get a huge sentence and can never own an animal ever again!!!
