Life-saving military investment
Tuesday, May 13, 2008

But the U.S. troops whose lives and limbs have been saved by "Mine Resistant Ambush Protected" vehicles in Iraq and Afghanistan know that cutting-edge technology remains a vital weapon in their arsenal.

Last week the state House of Representatives took a whack at two of the most indefensible examples of previous budgetary pork that totaled more than $32 million. The House should insist on its reallocation of nearly $24.5 million of those funds when the budget conferees assemble this week.

Diaries offer window on past
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
There's nothing quite like getting your hands on the diary of someone who was an ancestor's contemporary, who frequented the same places they did, and who may have lived on the same road or near the same plantation. A diary is a manuscript and often provides a consistent historic account of a time and place with details that a genealogist isn't likely to get from another source.

Today's stuff, tomorrow's treasures
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Thirty years ago, I did something right. Our children were growing up so rapidly that I couldn't keep track. Whole "stages" were flying past too fast to capture or document. The toddler who just learned to walk was suddenly kicking a soccer ball. The child who just learned the letter "a" was writing original stories. For each child I bought a cedar chest and a big plastic bin.

He looks like a real rock star, except for one important point: He's not playing the guitar. He's playing "Guitar Hero."...
