Is Chavis the guy? Or a big drop from Koenning?

Posted 08:45 a.m., December 4, 2008

Multiple reports have Dabo Swinney interviewing John Chavis today for Clemson's open defensive coordinator position. Chavis might also draw interest from other schools, including LSU. He is a Dillon native and knows the recruiting roads around the state.

Key numbers for Chavis/Tennessee over the last two years ...

2007 SEC scoring defense - 10th

2007 SEC total defense - 11th

2008 SEC scoring defense - 3rd

2008 SEC total defense - 2nd

Yards allowed vs. South Carolina in 2008 - 255 in 27-6 loss.

Key numbers for Koenning/Clemson over the last two years ...

2007 ACC scoring defense - 2nd

2007 ACC total defense - 2nd

2008 ACC scoring defense - 1st

2008 ACC total defesne - 4th

Yards allowed vs. South Carolina in 2008 - 304 in 31-14 win.

Chavis, by the way, was the Tennessee defensive coordinator when the Vols lost to Clemson, 27-14, in the Peach Bowl after the 2003 season (Koenning was not on that Clemson staff).

not a fair comparison here. Much more high-powered offenses in the SEC than in the ACC. and as much as CU's offense put their defense in bad situations, Tennessee's offense was much worse. I like the fact that Chavis has ties to SC and has been a proven recruiter in the state. You list '07 and '08 stats when UT was on an obvious slide. Chavis has had UT in the top SEC defense for sometime and probably needs a change of address and a fresh start.

What is the point in making comparisons? Koenning doesn't work at Clemson any longer because he was not "all in" with Dabo. Chavis is not at UT because he was not retained by their new coach. None of that has to do with their personal ability as a coach. Koenning could apparently not coexist with Dabo. What he does or doesn't do at another school is apples and oranges unless Clemson and his new school play exactly the same opponents, at the same time, in the same locale, under the same conditions, etc. Guess what, most times it is the players and not the scheme that gives success.

Check your FACTS. AGAIN.

UT-2nd in Total D in SEC. 4th in the NATION.(behind Bama)
UT-3rd in Scoring D in SEC. 12th in the NATION.(behind Bama and UF)

Despite an O that is ranked 11th in the SEC and in the 100's NATIONALLY that kept them on the field.

How were his stats so low in the SEC when his defense is FOURTH in the NATION in TOTAL DEFENSE this season?

slingle, are you trying to confuse GS with facts?
