Stingrays acquire Corey from Reading

Posted 10:15 a.m., November 17, 2008

This just in from the Stingrays.

The rich just got a little richer. As if the Stingrays, who have the best winning percentage in the ECHL, didn’t need anymore firepower in their lineup.

South Carolina Stingrays head coach Jared Bednar announced today that forward Jeff Corey has been acquired from the Reading Royals in exchange for future considerations.

Bednar first spotted Corey during Hershey’s preseason camp and wanted to sign him.

“I am really excited to be getting Jeff,” Bednar said. “I was really impressed with the way he played when I saw him in Hershey’s camp this year. He will bring a lot of experience with him having played a full season in the AHL, and will give us three very solid lines on the ice.

“Jeff was the best free agent in Hershey’s camp this fall. He’s a top-six forward, meaning that he’s a first or second line forward. He can play in every situation for us, penalty kill, power play and four-on-four. He’s got very good speed and he can score. He’ll be a very valuable addition.”

So the question begs to be asked, why if Corey is so good did Reading get rid of him? Probably because Reading is 5-9-0 and wanted to shake up their lineup.

Corey, 26, collected four goals (3g, 1a) and 10 penalty minutes in 12 games this season for Reading, after attending training camp for the Hershey Bears. The 6-foot, 200 pound forward spent last season in Denmark where he had 27 points (18g, 9a) and 63 penalty minutes in 36 games, tying him with the most goals scored on the team. Corey saw action with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons, amassing 23 points (11g, 12a) in 65 games played. Corey played a full season with the Marlies during the 2006-07 season where he had nine goals and 11 assists.

Prior to turning pro, the Boothwyn, PA native spent four years with the University of Vermont, finishing amongst the top five goal scorers each year. In 135 games with the Catamounts, he piled up 99 points (48g, 51a). Corey also spent three seasons with the USHL’s Sioux Falls Stampede, posting 87 points (41g, 46a) in 149 contests.

Corey will play his first game for the Stingrays on Wednesday when they travel to Charlotte to take on the Checkers at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Looks Mr. Man Crush. … errr, Mr. T. I mean will have to get his “Josh Godfrey” fix back up in Hershey for a while. Godfrey was called up after injuries to defenseman Sean Collins and Dean Arsene and the call-up of Tyler Sloan to the Washington Capitals.

When everyone is healthy again someone will be coming back down and it might not be Godfrey. The Bears just crushed Binghamton, 9-0, on Sunday and Godfrey was a team-high +5. (of course, I probably could have been a +5 with nine goals).

See you at The Rink,

APM

How did Dovgan look in his first 2 games back? Any news on Maxwell and Kiser playing at all this week?

More on Dovgan, Maxwell and Kiser can be found on the Stingrays web site in 'Behind the bench with Bednar'.

Andrew:
Why do we need an emergency backup goalie?

ECHL Transaction - Nov. 18
South Carolina:
Add Jeff Corey, F traded from Reading
Add John Havrilack, G added as emergency backup goaltender
Add Nate Kiser, D activated off IR
Delete Jeff Corey, F placed on the 3-day IR

With 4 games in 5 days, we are going to need two goalie.
What the heck is going on?

I just saw this on the Stingrays website....Paul McIlveen has been traded to Elmira to complete the trade that brought Jeff Corey to South Carolina.

Nope, Scherer is a natural winger, while McIlveen is probably best at center although he is versatile. I liked McIlveen.. sucks to him see him gone.
