What was Buddy Pough thinking?

Posted 01:32 p.m., December 1, 2008

Buddy Pough's S.C. State Bulldogs acquitted themselves well at App State on Saturday in the FCS playoffs, losing by 37-21 to the three-time defending national champs.

But with App State running out the clock at the end with a 30-21 lead, Pough for some reason called back-to-back timeouts with 18 and 12 seconds left, as if he wanted to try to get the ball back.

On fourth-and-3, App State put receiver Brian Quick back in the game, and Armanti Edwards threw a 33-yard TD pass with five seconds left for the final margin.

“It was kind of boneheaded on my part,” Pough said after the game. “He (App State coach Jerry Moore) taught me a lesson in the end. If a guy’s giving you an out, go ahead and take it. I knew a pass was coming and it kind of made the game a little bit bigger margin than it should have been. But, it serves me right.”

Still, the Bulldogs led 14-10 in the second quarter, and RB Will Ford gained 117 yards on 23 carries.

“The one thing I think you can see from having seen us in here today is that we belong,” Pough told the Orangeburg Times and Democrat. “Now that we’ve done that, the next thing for us is to get in and actually get something done.”
