Palmetto Pro Soccer Players

Posted 10:41 a.m., August 18, 2008

Got this from a Battery fan recently and he points out that South Carolina does indeed have some soccer talent.

We run a “Palmetto Pros” package every Sunday, featuring baseball players with ties to South Carolina at the professional level.

I do a similar package in the fall for the NFL.

So, here’s a list of players with ties to the state that play at the MLS level or for national teams. (Although I think Bobby Convey is a bit of stretch since he only lives here a couple of months out of the year).

But many thanks go out to Scott Johnstone, who provided the list. Let me know who else is out there that’s not on the list.

Mount Pleasant Resident

Boby Convey - Reading FC, USMNT

Well, off the top of my head, current Battery players Ian Fuller and Johnny Wilson are both Clemson alumni and JW was actually born in Seneca. And current Battery GK Keith Wiggans is from CofC, born in Charleston I believe.

None of the players, with the exception of JW and Keith (who I thought was from Athens) on the above list are actually from South Carolina, though they did all spend their college days here.

Here is a list (off the top of my head) of current and past professional players who actually grew up in SC (though there aren't many MLS or national team ties).

Temoc Suarez: Mt. P/ UNC/ Dallas Burn, and several other USL/USISL teams

Troy Lesesne: Columbia/ CofC/ Charleston Battery

Ben Hollingsworth: Mt. P/ SMU & CofC/ Charleston Battery, and I know he went overseas on trial to Macabi Tel Aviv

Brady Bryant: Columbia/ U of Mobile/ Charlotte Eagles, Wilmington Hammerheads, and one year of minor league arena football

Anthony Stovall: Columbia/ USC/ Cleveland City Stars, Charlotte Eagles

Jason Hotchkin: Greenville/ na/ Cleveland City Stars, New Jersey Ironmen (MISL), other MISL clubs and one or two years overseas

Hunter Gilstrap: Columbia/ Clemson & CofC/ Maritzburg United (Absa Premiership- South Africa), Cleveland City Stars, Miami FC
